Lead paint

Yes, there are kits to test for lead in paint. I have seen them at local stores but not lately. Try a paint store. Unless you have small children , you can probably paint over leaded paint. To adversely affect you, the paint would have to be eaten or the dust from it breathed into the lungs. I don't think they have used lead in paint since the 80s. I worked at a tetra ethyl lead plant and that was when we shut down. bg

It looks like the gubment can help ya out:

It looks as though they have programs for assisting home owners as yourself to rid the house of lead paint safely and affectively. But I've also heard as mentioned above, if you don't have kids, just paint the heck out of it over the top. And don't be scratching the walls and inhaling or eating the paint chips.

If you cover it up, the biggest warning would apply to your windows. Typical window must be scraped before painting. If ypu do this, make sure not to vacuum dust up unless you have special filter on your vac,. you should cover carpets below the window and use wet cloths to remove dust from the sills.

These are the directions given to owners of older houses rented to govt. clients.

Industrial

We had a paint crew in last year and paint our storage tanks. Of course we had lead paint on them, in service since 47. They had a new product you spray it on before you strip/sandblast. It ecapsulates the lead and then it can be cleaned up at your leisure.

Yup,when he got a call for an estimate on a deck rebuild or a new one,He judged the way he built it by the size of the guy that answered the door... BIG GUY... . BIG WOOD... instead of 2x8s --16"cnt. He would go with 2x12s --12"ctr...
