Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) less then 2 gal. left an no chime or light??

just filled up an put in 32. 2 gallons in my 34 gal. tank . fuel guage was reading a 1/4 tank an no light or chime came on. any ideas ? how many gal. should be in there when the light comes on?
 
Sounds like the fuel sending unit is going out. I'm generally at 1/8 tank when I can only put 26 or 27 gallons in.

My '02 used to get the idiot light and chime at the 9 gallons left mark, approx the 1/8th tank line. Was that way for several years, but last fuel up I got the light and drove about another 30 miles before I fueled up and it took 34. 5 gallons exactly! Must have been running on what was left in my filter at that moment, though this last fill up this morning it went off around the usual time, not sure if there is a glitch, since I'm not sure how the sensor works. I just fuel up alittle sooner now... .
 
I bought a new sending unit and got a fuel tank module off Ebay, as soon as I can ge time I am going to switch it out. I will look and see if I have the part numbers still. The sending unit was $65. 00, the fuel module, which comes with a sending unit, will run around $300-400 new.

according to the owners manual the low level fuel indicator light is suposed to come on with 1/8 of a tank of fuel , that is about 4. 25 gal. Mine comes on at 1/8 of a tank alright but at that level I still ahve 10 gal of fuel. It was like that right from the factory. I complained about it to the dealer without much success, I have since learned that most trucks from 2001 are that way .

Knowing what can be required to restart a diesel after running it out of fuel, I can understand why Dodge might have set it up this way! :eek:

when I first test drove my 2000 the gauge was all the way down and the light was on, when I picked the truck up it was all the way full so I thought it worked fine. after driving 600 miles and the gauge said just under 1/4 tank I thought I was getting really good milage, then I ran out of fuel and the gauge has never been right since. now I never let it go below 1/2.

My light works just like yours, 1/8 tank and it's on. The difference with mine is I've only got a little over a gallon left at that point.



My gauge also works in a very non linear fashion, moves slowly when full and falls faster as it drains, weird. I sure like my auxiliary tank!

May I jump in here(?). My dash gauge seems to drop to empty after about ¼ to 1/3 of the fuel is used. Does float a bit, but the light, (no chime– don’t know if I have sound 97 3500) seemed to come on at around the 1/8th – the last time I let it go that low. I also have a Transflow extra tank that also uses the dash gauge.

I called Transflow – and they could not help, with over the phone diagnosis. The parts are extremely expensive – IMO. Any thoughts experiences? – Tks Mike n Virginia 97 3500
 
For me, anything below 1/3 of the tank has the needle slowly fluctuating up and down, so as I approach 1/8 tank, the light will go on for a while, then go off for a while, etc.



Once the needle settles in between 1/4 and 1/8, I tend to fill up.



That being said, it is definitely not accurate, because sometimes at 1/8 I am putting in 30gals, and other times its 26gal

Mine's the same way, when the light goes on it takes ~24 gallons to top it off. The most I ever put in was 30 gallons, the conservative fuel gauge keeps me safe :p .
 
After having mine replaced under warranty, don't ask me how I knew it was not working, mine comes on with about 1/8 showing and takes exactly 9 gallons.
 
Mine showed 1/4 tank when I ran out of diesel in the middle of the night! Now I am wondering if that was the problem when I thought it was the lift pump? Ended up having the vp44 and lift pump replaced. At this point I figure that I might as well figure I needed them both cause I got them both!
 
I too show about 8 to 9 gallons at the chime and linearity is poor also. I don't let her drop below a quarter tank any longer because of the Draw Straw. However; knowing how the factory Fuel Canister functions on a stock fuel system I would avoid dropping below a quarter tank too...



The reason is due to the way the canister or module captures fuel or retains it within the base of the canister during low-fuel conditions. All of the returned fuel from the re-circulative design places heated fuel right back into the draw-reservoir. Yes, there is some exchange due to fuel slosh within the baffling of the canister but, in a low-fuel condition in hotter geographical climates (such as Phoenix Arizona in the summer time) the fuel temperature is way high. I think this contributes to the problem of the longevity of the VP-44 just as a general finding.
