ok guys... i have read the past posts about fuel injectors and computer boxes. i want a moderate power increase, yet wish to retain the legendary cummins reliability. the only mod presently done is a straight pipe, and gauges are on their way. i think that i would like like the JVD torque enhancer computer, i believe that it adds fuel and is a boost(turbo)box as well??. now about injectors, are the 275's worth the money or should i just go with the dd1's right off the bat. or if i go with the dd injectors should i use thier boost box, and does it add fuel as well? i really am looking for experiences and insight with this combo and if this box is appropriate with these injectors? how much power will this give me? i would like to aquire about 75-100hp total. any more specific insight would be appriciated.

jkern,

From what I have seen at the dyno runs I've been to,a stock 98. 5-2000 with a manual trans will generally put 205-215 horsepower to the ground,so you can base your decision on that. A couple of things to keep in mind... injectors usually raise mpg 1 to 1. 5 with none to slightly higher EGT's... and fueling boxes make your mpg lower with considerably higher EGT's.

You say you want "modest",and 75-100hp would put you near the 300hp mark. DD stage 2 or 3 injectors -OR- a TST,Blue Chip(JVD is a Blue Chip box),Power Edge, etc. fueling boxes will also get you there (at their higher settings of course). Once you combine bigger injectors and a box, then your out of the "moderate" range and your clutch WILL start slipping and you'll have to carefully watch EGT's when the box is on.

These approximate figures listed below are what I've seen on 98. 5-2000 ETC 24v engines on the dyno (sorry ETH owners, stay out of this because of your different HP figures):

DD stage 1... 265hp(reported by someone else)
DD stage 2... 295hp
DD stage 3... 310hp
DD stage 2 w/Blue Box... 375+(clutch slipping)
275inj w/boost module... 240hp
275inj w/VanAaken... 285hp
275inj w/propane... 280hp
275inj w/Blue Box... 330-350hp(slipping)
275inj w/Powermax3... 340hp
275inj w/Powermax3 and VanAaken... 375hp
VanAaken (alone)... 240hp

Once again I was to say these are approximate figures that I saw. I also want to add, injectors won't strain your injector pump, whereas a fueling box will. I'm not two sided about this because I will eventually be using both injectors and a fueling box.

I feel I wasted money on the 275's. When I unplug my VA box, the truck runs like I've done nothing to it. Plug the box back in and zoom zoom zoom. Just my 2 cents.

Hello fellow Pennsylvania resident. You could read about injectors and boxes for hours and still have no idea of which way to go. It also depends on how much money you want to spend. I have heard numerous opinions about 275's. Some people like them, some people think they are a waste of money. Personally, my 275's work great. They make the truck run like it should have from the factory. I have a friend with DD1's and I can't tell the difference from my 275's. I think all of the boxes out there are excellent products. Every one has had some time now to work out the bugs. I love my TST PowerMax1. That combined with the 275's turns my truck into a super running rig. Very little smoke, mileage depends on how hard you drive it, and fairly safe EGT's. A good combo now that people are talking about is the Edge EZ Box and 275's. I have an EZ Box on order and should have it next week, so I don't have any real world experience with it yet.
My best advice for you is to talk with people with the products you are considering. There is nothing like real world experience.
Good Luck

I prefer larger injectors like DDII's or III's for everyday driving. Save the box's for the dyno runs. Of course, with either power upgrade, you must address the basic stuff first like gauges, exhaust, transmission (auto) and possibly a clutch depending on how much HP/torque you are working to obtain.

Some really good responses here! MikeR, very nice! I would add one thing. If you are adding a computer box, highly recommend you check your fuel pressure. Low pressure and a box are not good bedfellows.

The choice is yours. They both work just fine. The reason that some people don,t think the 275,s make any difference is your not changing the fueling curve in the ecm. Injectors just add more fuel everywhere. If you look at a dyno graph with 275,s you will see an average hp increase of 40hp. Look at a fueling box,s dyno graph and you will see big hp increase down low in the rpm,s, and then it will slowly taper off. So even if both products make the same peak hp,the mid range hp is usually different.

The first box i tried was the VA. The truck felt faster, but it only pickup 23 peak hp. Then i tried the 275,s. I thought they sent me the wrong injectors. It felt like there was know difference. (or very little)The truck picked up 40hp at peak rpm,s. The bid difference is that injectors give you a smoother power transission. A fueling box is a lot more radical.

If you like power i would suggest DDIII,s and a fueling box or two. (you can double them up)Just up date your lines and install a fuel gauge. Your pump will be fine. I have gotten 525hp on just fuel.

thanks for the info so far guys. that little list with approx hp really helps. i don't mind any smoke, my truck already sounds like a "coal bucket" might as well look like one too #ad
i guess the consensus of the group so far is to go with injectors and only use the box when necessary to roast a PSD #ad
(this is ph*rd country where i live) please keep the opinions coming.

Hey Jeremy, Combine the JVD with a big set of injectors and you will deffinately get ALOT of smoke. I have both and I am really happy with the way it runs. I normally don't turn the box on unless I'm playin around pullin a sled or just smokin out the PSD behind me... lol. If you decide to go with both the injectors and the box you will almost deffinately need a clutch, and you deffinately need gauges too b/c you will build some heat when running both at the same time. If you would like, e-mail me and I can discuss this with you in more detail. Good Luck to ya!

I bought the b&d box. I don't have the injectors. The engine runs the it should now, I think. But I know If I really get on it, I'm burning the clutch a little every time. I can hear it. I'm going to need a heavy duty clutch sometime. My mileage went up 3 miles/gallon empty, and 2. 5 heavy (pulling a 15000 lb trailer) I'm very happy, and I would never unplug it. I wish I had known about the adjustable boxes they are coming out with now, I might have opted for one of those. I will get the injecters later. I'm going to put a 4 inch exhaust on next.
