Cummins Conversion on a 4BT

Possible donor for 4bt?

Okay Im posting this on this page and the first gen page.

This is going into a 83 Crew Cab W350

Donor truck 91 1/2 W250, all stock 150,000 miles 5 speed getrag, 4wd 3:54 gears. Truck has a 3" lift and 35"x12. 5"x16. 5 rims also.

I want everything like everyone does. Mileage and enough torque to pull a mountain.

But Id be happy with 550 to 600 ft/lbs of torque. HP doesnt matter its just a byproduct of torque anyway. Ill drive it 90 miles 5 days a week, tow a 24' enclosed car trailer and other stuff too.

The Getrag will probably go in favor of the NV4500HD.

BOMBing list I have accumulated from what others have done in the past.

1 K&N filter

2 Dump the 21cm hot end from the turbo. Should I have the turbo rebuilt at 150K? I doubt it but have any gone bad at this mileage?

Improve the exhaust system. Does this turbo have a waste gate do I need it or should I loose it?

3 Injectors? What do you think?

4 Pump mods/Rebuild? Which companys do rotary pumps for performance? Or should I just swap in a P7100 if that is possible?

5 Rebuild the Cummins Rings/Bearings/Seals ? What do you think?

6 Rebuild the cylinder head? With some modifications ie porting, valve job etc?

7 Cant forget gauges.

8 What clutch to handle the new power?

I want to build a good reliable combination not something that is going to break alot of parts. I know stuff happens I just want to do it once and do it right.

Any books on performance for the B59? Any good machine shops for this B59 in the Chicago area?

Lets hear your "dream" B59 combinations too.

Thanks for the input,

"but"

Will the B-1 turbo work on the 1st generation. Never heard of 350HP 1st Gen.

You've got my attention... ...

Backroad... ... . :p

I thought DonM was claiming over 400hp out of a 12v???

12v dump more fuel on the bottom side and should build boost faster than a 24v. . in theory. I don't have one though.

1. Gauges

2. Piers', BD or Diesel Dynamics exchange 230hp VE pump

3. 300hp Lucas "ole' blue special" injectors from Big Don or Piers.

4. 14cm^2 Housing or switch to HX35 12cm^2

5. Larger Mandrel Bent exhaust

6. NV4500HD - better get decent clutch(the Luk I had on my mildly BOMBed '90 was pretty greasy) South Bend maybe?

7. Marine Teflon coated pistons

8. Thicker head gasket.

9. Cross flow radiator outta 2nd gen truck.

10. 2nd Gen. intercooler and homebrew plumbing

11. How well does the propane work on 1st gen trucks?

12. Last but not least you gotta have Banks stickers all over it LOL

joesoot,

Will the combination of the tuned up VE pump, Old Blue injectors etc blow alot of soot?

What is acceptable for the amout of haze/smoking from the exhaust as not to cause problems with that stuff getting into the crankcase and oil?

How well will a Second Gen radiator and innercooler fit this First Gen core support?

Its looking like I should get a wrecked 96-98 12V with a NV4500 and 4WD for this conversion. A 2WD will probably work if I exchange the NV4500HD 2WD for a 4WD unit. Just as long as I get a 5speed, Second Gen Cummins and a Dana 80 rear axle with a 3:54 gearing would be cool.

Maybe the search is on again for more drivetrain stuff.

1. Quite possibly depending upon the tuning of the VE pump, Piers should have some good info on that combination: www.pierdiesel.com

2. If you are worried about diluting your oil with fuel, you might want to get your oil analyzed once the truck is tuned to a power level you can live with.

3. I wish I knew, I never went that far with my old one, wanted to though.

Getting a P7100 equipped engine would probably be more cost effective in the long run.

The 89 to 93 12v and the 94 to 98 12v are two different animals due to the injection pump used. The 1st generations (89 to 93) use the VE pump and teh 94 to 98 uses the P7100 pump.

Its much harder to turn up the VE pumps vs the P7100 pump.
