My rig needs some new tires. Currently running the Michelin LTX M/S 285/75-16 on the stock aluminum rim. While the tires hook well, drive nice and are quiet, they look kinda balloonish on the stock 8" rim.

I think any 33" and especially a 35" tire would look kinda balloonish on the 16" rim, so I'm looking at some bigger ones. I want something that looks somewhat aggressive, but still has manners on the street (not objectionably loud, good grip, decent wear, load range D or E, etc). It really seems you have to get into a 20" rim to get that.

What are you guys running? Let's see some pics. :) I'd like to see what some of you guys have, which might point me in the right direction.

Here's my ride now:

I think the stock rims look good with 33s. i've not seen em with 35's. i've got some 16x10 eagles on mine with 33s and it does look good, but honestly i think the stockers look better. i've on occasion looked for a good deal on some stockers as they were already gone when i bought the trucko.

keep the rims.

as for the tires. i'm a big fan of bfg a/t. the 295/75/16 is a "D" rated tire and they're pretty quiet. you'll also get a lot of miles on em.

if you decide to get rid of your stock wheels, let me have a shot at the bid please.

good luck, jeff

Keith, you could get a set of 3G 17" wheels and put BFG 285/70/17's on them. Here's a pic of JARichard's rig with that size tire. Sorry for the small pic.

You could go with 18" rims with 325/60/18" too. I have a set of 18" Weld Typhoons I'm looking to unload.

Truck is at home in the garage but I am running Xterrains with a 16x10 wheel and 33x12. 5 tire load range D. I cant hear them over the motor and wear really good if you keep them rotated. I have a big offset and they throw mud all over the sides but it covers up the dents :D

The Dirt Grips from PJs have all sorts of sizes , for different rim sizes and lots of sizes in rated E.

I don't have a shot of the whole truck.

But the 33x12. 5 fit without a lift, with 16 x 8s.

I like the on road noise, great off road, great in the snow, better than stock 245 Mich in the rain.

Keith,

Just pick up a set of used 3rd Gen wheels for almost nothing, ditch the centercaps, and powdercoat them black or grey for $100 and you're done... . those are 315BFG's on the stock 17's by the way.

This is my set of 315/70r17's on eagle alloys size 17X9 w/ about 5 inches of backspacing.

No rub at full lock (D25 springs) and because of the odd 9 inch width the tires don't balloon out at all. Tire wear has been good (even with BFG's  )

These are BFG AT 315/75-16 on 16x8 MB Razor wheels. No rub with a 2" leveling kit. My readers rig has a side shot of the wheels.

Can you guys with 33" and 34" tires fit that size up in the spare? I have 265/75s and it seems like 2-3 extra inches is going to have it rubbing against the exhaust.

How about the D ratings? Anybody notice any difference under load than an E rating?

Kevin your truck is looking good. I remember riding in that truck once, from Connecticut to Massdiesel's shop. Looks a lot more "Bombed" now

Just curious, what is the thing with black wheels? Seen a lot of them all of a sudden in recent times. New fad I take it but just wondering where it came from.

I want to go back to 35" tires, but these came with the stock 285/75R17s on them, so they are there for now.

I kinda miss this look though...

Its an offroader thing, honestly, I think it looks like shiat! Basicly, black steelies are cheap, so thats what alot of wheeling guys run. They think it make the rig look mean, personally I think black wheels look like poo. I ran them for a while (due to money) and honestly, I hated them. Granted, you dont have to polish them and worry about pitting aluminum, but again, I think they are ugly as hell. Even when I was wheeling, I was still bling blingin! :-laf

Vaughn,

I've been running black rims for years on all my trucks. I guess I picked it up from my motocross bikes which also have always had black rims. Through the 80's & 90's it was very rare to see black rims on the street but I guess they are catching on now because I'm starting to see a lot more lately.

Alphacowboy,

Take a closer look, those are not steel rims, they are the factory 3rd Gen Alloys powdercoated black. Steel rims are horrible. You look at my truck and you think it looks like shiat and I look at your truck and think it looks like shiat with the shiny aluminums. It's just a personal preference. Give me a brand new expensive wheel with a blingin' aluminum finish and I'll take it straight to the powerdercoater for some gloss black or gun metal grey.

By the way, for anyone who's thinking about powdercoating if black is too much for you the gun metal grey looks insane on any color truck with 3rd gen wheels (without the center caps of course).

I've never been for the all bright Chrome.

Coated aluminum is nicer looking to me.

My wife's car came with a light grey powder coated rims, looks nice.

Actual I have to say I like it when my rims are just a little dirty. Looks sorta like a light grey. But of course it's only the fronts from these particular disk pads.

The new Teflon black ARs look nice too. I'd like to get these if I get a 2nd set of rims.

Anyone heard how the AR Teflon's are holding up?

DBD, that does look pretty good. I have looked at a few dark colored rims, nothing hit my fancy yet though.

BTW, does a 35" tire fit under a 2nd Gen with no lift? I was thinking a 33" might be the limit.

Keith,

You'll have to stick with the 33's. My 315's rub a tiny bit at full lock on the lower control arm with a leveling kit but it's very minor. Your 33's should fit at stock height but other's can chime in to confirm. The only reason I run the 315 BFG's is because they're Hummer take-off's and I get them for $100 each, brand new. At $100 each, it makes is much easier to lay the rubber down and not think twice about your tires.

I think your truck would probably look better with the gun metal powdercoat. I'm sure you could get a set of the factory alloys for free. They look really good without the centercaps and they're the perfect offset. Check it out, I think it looks insane... .
