so i will try getting to the tone ring mod tomorrow... 1/8th inch if not less should all i need to remove from the hole to get the right amount of advance. from what i read 2 degrees is about the goal.

HOW can i check this? i know my timing light wont work on a diesel... or will it?

can i clip the lead to the #1 fuel injector lead to know when it is sending fuel? i know this would be a way more broad deal than a spark plug that only fires once. if this would get the strobe to fire what to i index the timing off of?

i know IF it were to work i cant make adjustments without shuting the truck down and rotating the tone ring again... but atleast i have an idea of how many degrees i have changed everything... .

ANY input is more then welcome.

thanks

Grant

On a standard design diesel you can check timing with a timing light using a piezo electric clamp on pick up devise. I haven't tried it on a common rail, since the rail is constantly charged I'll have to try it to see if the injector opening will cause enough of a pulse to trigger,I am doubtfull.

I dont have a piezeo electric clamp... . i dont think i do anyway... thats not the pickup on the timing light is it?

well, if you get a chance to check and see if this works please let me know.

thanks, and anyone else?

Grant

Why not just get ahold of your snap on guy and tell them what you want?

Also, be sure to note that the timing on your truck will be on where near static...

Just give the ring a yank, and if it's too rattly, or MPG not increasing, move it around a bit...

Merrick

BTW, you posted the 1st and 2nd post perfectly 24hours apart? :D

What do you mean by that, can you tap the tone ring one way or the other with a punch without loosening the bolts?

No, No , No, No,, far from it!

What I meant was just give it some trial and error.

Start teh truck, drive a tank, listen to the motor, then adjust the ring, then try another tank, adjust the ring.

Please don't try to adjust it with any shortcuts.

I would think a good compass could tell you approx how many degrees you've changed it just by how much you notch the holes. If you go too far you'll know, as Merrick said the engine will "rattle".

as long as you don't grind the 4 mounting bolt holes down, you can't go too far... they prevent it from exceeding around 2. 5deg

[i'd type in the symbol, but the new firefox does stupid things when you hit alt+1 [of alt+0176] while on the tdr pages - something to do with the script??]
