Kenny, While some of the products in your links are put together in America by Americans, the components are made overseas. I know this a sore spot for some folks here and Im not picking at your beliefs, Im just saying from a world labor market standpoint we cant compete. Its basic economics. As for your links, Im a bit of an audiophile and know exactly what goes into stereo equipment. The best drivers for speakers are made in denmark and france (focal, scanspeak) the best mother boards are made in Japan, the best chipsets (Burr-Brown) are made in china for the parent company texas instruments. The best CD transports (philips) are made in china for the danish company. The amount of tax breaks and capital investmert required to be competitive in these products isnt worth it if the labor cost prices you out of the market for those products.

I take what I can get its better than everything being made in a foreign country. But I understand what you are saying

Do a Google search is right, I buy American made clothes( flison /shennes/ and many others) You just have to work the internet a little. I refused to buy Chinese shoes , there are excellent American made shoes Red Wing ect, You can not go to a big box store to buy these things they have profit margins to meet, local people in small business is the way I do it. Another example I wanted a hat a Fedora to be exact I searched and found a company in California that make high quality hats Pacific ~ something. There are a lot of entrepreneurs making parts for our trucks too.

Work boots: RedWing, Made in USA

Shoes: New Balance, Made in USA

Socks: Gold Toe, Made in USA

T-shirts: Anvil, Made in USA

Overalls: Carhartt, Made in USA

I look at everything I buy. If there is a product available that is made in USA, I will buy it, regardless of cost. The "savings" in the price is a higher cost in the long run with loss of jobs and revenue in our country. You cannot shop by "brand', as many "brands" have a cheap line they sell to the "discount" big box stores. Shop by country of origin. There is a high cost to the "low" price.

Even the Chinese apparently appreciate a quality work boot, about 18 months ago I was at the White boot factory in Spokane, WA, they told me they export quite a few custom boots for fire fighters in China.

My current pair of Whites was new in 1990 and has been rebuilt three times IIRC, excellent custom footwear.

I liked what I recently saw in a menards flyer showcasing all the products made in the USA. I know you can also find a lot of junk at menards also but I think that is a step to recognizing all the local USA brands. Thanks Menards keep it up!!!

I just thought of another place i got a great heavy shirt from,The name of the place is Johnson Mills they are in Vermont ,They have tons of winter warm stuff. Also do not forget Filson, most but not all their stuff is American made, Roundhouse jeans is made here too,did you know most of your jeans come from China now?? Do a goggle search for American made Jeans, there are a few companies out there lets support them. And lets not be confused by the initial higher cost for purchasing American quality. You are not comparing equals. A Filson coat WILL last 2 or 3 generations easily say that for a Chinese knock off. I have a 60 year old Woolrich coat that was made in the USA back then my fathers, I had it dry cleaned and the cleaner even remarked what a great coat this was. It is still in great shape.

How to identify Chinese products with barcode!!!

The whole world is afraid of China-made "black hearted goods".

Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan or China ?

If the first 3 digits of the barcode are 690, 691 or 692, the products MADE IN CHINA.

471 is Made in Taiwan .

This is our right to know, but the government and related departments never educate the public, therefore we have to RESCUE ourselves.

Nowadays, Chinese businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products "MADE IN CHINA ", so they don't show from which country it is made.

However, you may now refer to the barcode, remember if the first 3 digits are:

690-692 … then it is MADE IN CHINA .

00 - 09 … USA & CANADA

30 - 37 … FRANCE

40 - 44 … GERMANY

47 ... Taiwan

49 … JAPAN

50 … UK

BUY USA by watching for "0" at the beginning of the number. We need every boost we can get!

I'd have to say that while the buy amercian is commendable, you guys are a minority as shown by the exodus of mainstream production to foreign countries. I too enjoy quality and personally dont care where it's made as long as it has the quality Im looking for.

This is a general law of econ and its why the production has left. Consumers will spend money for products that they value at the cheapest price. The way companies all over the world are doing this is moving production to the cheapest labor pools.

Heres a bright side though: As the rest of the worlds standard of living comes up and their labor cost adjust accordingly, Americans are still the most efficeint producers on the planet as measured by GDP per capita. So whats that mean? When the Chinese auto industry is paying their equivalent ot ours, the work will come back here. We just have to be patient and not do stupid crap to interfere with the labor markets.

I have many opinions on this subject, but my chinese piece of crap keyboard probably wouldn't survive all the typing. I will say that passage of the Fairtax would do wonders to bring back industry to the US.

Yessir! The FairTax would be a revolution and would flood the jobs and manufacturing back into this country. Bout time you chimed back in on the TDR!

;)

This is getting political and for what it is worth are some thoughts for you all to chew on.

1. At one time the USA produced the lowest cost and best quality products in the world. Over regulation, taxes, wages, it goes on and on caused quality to lower and costs to increase. It has gotten to the point where entrepreneurs with very few exceptions enter the market and be successful and providing jobs. When they do we the US citizens criticize them as money hungry demons and should be tared and feathered. Our wonderful news media does the same thing talking about their supposed profits not on the jobs and wages they provide for us. Are we jealous because we are not willing to sacrifice, work hard, fail/try again until successful. Nope we criticize them, where is the motivation to develop new quality low cost products, jobs and wage under these conditions.

2. Up until the 80's we the USA was the largest creditor nation in the world. We loaned money to everyone; you remember we criticized this individually and in the news media. When we did borrow money we built some industrial factory and paid off our debt. Will we got our wish we are now the largest debtor nation in the world!!!! We are owing more and more every second, minute.

3. The 3 biggest emerging economies is Russia, India, China not the USA!!!! We continue to be ignorant of this and refuse to do anything to correct it. We need to help the entrepreneurs get business going again with out federal government interference. Something sad is Russia, India, yes even China is allowing entrepreneurs to excel without encumbrance like we used to do in the USA. So their economies are booming ours is crashing. Oh and check it out China is becoming the world bank. Don't believe they are a creditor nation just check and see how much they have loaned the USA!!! Scary yes and we had best wake up.

4. About 40% of the US economy is dependent on the federal government. When a government provides your livelihood we are not a free people any longer. Every single time you fall back on the federal government you lose a little more freedom. That 40% is increasing with bailouts, government takeovers, and all other items we ask them to provide us rather than provide for ourselves as free independent people. But we have become lazy not willing to work and fail to be free entrepreneurs and telling the federal government we don't need or want you help. WE THE PEOPLE will provide for ourselves freely. By the way you report to us and you had best change your ways or we will fix it for you. Are you up for it? Yes buying American helps but going to take a lot more to change our attitudes and mindset. Remember a government handout is NEVER FREE!! Whining about this will never fix this only action be each and everyone of us. We need band together by looking at not our differences. Rather our believes in common and we will find more in common to fight for than differences. We keep bickering on our petty differences and not band together to preserve the good we are going to crash. The time is now this very minute or it going to be to late; we need leaders who agree and will fight to keep us free. Sadly we are lacking this leadership so each of us need develop it and get others to follow with the freedom ring believes and fix this now. I am honestly scared where we are headed. One of our best exports was our freedom as an example to others. Not our world domination, policing of the world. We are no longer the example for others to strive for rather we are becoming a nation to be feared and hated. People hate you when you try to FORCE your way on them rather than provide them the example to follow and they do so on there own. We did it when our founding fathers broke away from England, the Civil War, etc. and so can they. We need let them do it!!!!!

I could go on for hours and hours and don't even get me started on the public schools. I have studied this in depth and its history. The book "Cloning of America" pretty much sums it up.

Okay step down of soap box and sure there will be opposing views. Good there should be which means somebody started thinking instead of being led by the nose; said that I will not debate this here as it is the wrong forum. As the President says "God Bless America" until some judge say he cannot say this because of separation of church and state!!! I hope God does Bless America we need all the help we can get and yours.

VERY well said, Bob! And what the dumb masses in this country do not understand (partly because the government's system of "education" does not "teach" it) is BUSINESSES DO NOT PAY TAXES!!!!! The cost of doing business is passed on to the consumer in the cost of the item sold. The wealth envy crowd LOVES to say "tax the wealthy" (the business owner) or "tax the business". Then they fuss when a medical bill, a gallon of fuel or a sack of bread is so high. Every aspect of production is taxed in this country. The manufacturer of everything has to pay matching withholding in every employee they hire. They have to pay unemployment insurance, vacation and often health care insurance, in addition to all the corporate taxes, state taxes, city taxes and property taxes. All of this is reflected in the cost of every step of production of anything produced in this country. When the tax burden on business is lifted or at least dramatically reduced, you will see production return to the USA. If we continue to punish achievement and reward non productivity, we will continue down the road to non productivity and dependency on third world countries for everything, as we head toward their standards of living. WE NEED THE DAMN FAIRTAX! EVERYONE should pay at least SOMETHING to live here and to use the country's infrastructure and social services. People need to quit the wealth envy attitude and strive to gain wealth themselves instead of turning to the governmet to plunder the pockets of the ones who DO work hard and earn wealth.

I agree with Bob!

I think unions and environmental regulations are also to blame. The latter will only get worse if the cap and trade crap is pushed through. The current administration seems like they are doing everything they can to drive costs up and drive business and manufacturing overseas.

The unions sometimes just don't know when to say when. Labor costs and taxes are the huge reason why it is cheaper to start with the raw materials here, ship them to china, manufacture a product and ship it back for cheaper than it can be produced in the US.

Just my . 02

Good intelligent debate! Now if we can get some politicians with the balls to read and actually implement a plan to turn this country around we could return to our former glory. We need Change you can believe in! O hell no! Hey Dnut this thread is running my post count up! The administrators might boot me off for using up too much bandwidth! :-laf

Exactly why Unions should have changed tactics when they saw this happening, so there would be jobs for their members in the future, they dropped the ball in a big way IMO.

The enviros are another subject entirely. At a job I held, about 5 years ago, we had two processes to make a product. The superior product was made in a way that required more regulation (read as $$$ and hazard) and was made overseas. It put a bunch of folks out of work here and contaminated some other environment, as if it will not some day effect us on this side of the world.

Good point.

Look what happened to Vise Grip. For those who haven't been watching, they auctioned off the factory a couple weeks ago. Ever since Irwin bought them their steel came from China but at least they were assembled here. Not any more.

Another one bites the dust. Alas.

Vise Grip is now Chinese too? YUCK!!! Who makes a locking plier that is NOT chinese?

Politicians by nature do not have testicles. They are removed by special interest groups and kept in jars on desks of the highest bidder. When a new special interest is able to buy the testicles the politician votes where they are at that time. Nancy Pelosi's balls are on the desk of the big three insurance companies right now.

Not sure where Obamas are but Im pretty suyre they are somewhere in congress tied up thus the reason he is unable to do any of the assanine things he said he was gonna do. Pretty bad when your own party who is the majority in congress is fighting you on your campaign goals.
