liberty is the largest importer of Chinese safes in the world. With most of their stuff the body is made in china, then they ship it over and put the interior and paint on in the states and a slap a made in USA sticker on it. Same with browning. All are Chinese until you get to the upper end stuff like the prestige series.
The number that never lies with a safe is the weight. Most of the stuff that is advertised as "5 inch thick door with one inch walls" is just sheet metal wrapped around fire board. A safe made with plate steel will be at least 1000 pounds. That's why liberty has some gigantic safes that weight less than 1000 pounds and cost about 2500, and their national security series costs more than double weigh more than double for a smaller safe.
Used bank safes pop up for sale pretty frequently. They are normally 1 inch plate walls 1.5 inch door and weigh 2500-5000 pounds. If you have the equipment to haul one away you can pick them up for 1000 to 2000 bucks. Definitely the best safe for the money. That's what im looking for anyway. There is certainly something to be said for buying one new though. Good companies like Amsec have a lifetime warrantee on their high end stuff. If somebody scratches the paint trying to break in they will deliver a brand new safe. For something with that kind of warrantee don't expect to pay less than 4000. In the world of safes you get exactly what you pay for.
