Mine quits at 5deg. fahrenheit. Its going down to that tonight and I'll post in the morning to let you guys know. Dealer won't replace it because it was working when he saw it.

My gage acts up too, I don't Know if its the pump or the gage?

Will the Goat run on 3psi? Sometimes it jumps up to 6psi I don't know what do do?

The lift pump I just put in two days ago only reads 4-5 psi at startup, 7 psi at normal throttle. That's the same as the pump I replaced which was two years old. :eek:

If your useing straight #2 fuel and the temperatures are getting below freezeing this could be part of the problem. I had that experience this fall with mine and when I put in a blend 50% #1 fuel my problems went away. Another thing I noticed is when I had my truck in the shop for 4 hours and things warmed up I got 2 psi more until I drove it outside for awhile and then the psi went back to normal.

EDIT:: Another thing to check is I know of a few people around here that started useing biodiesel and the dodge lift pumps do not like it, mine included.

Ready for #3

I am at 41000 miles and this morning the fuel pressure gauge started bouncing, went out for lunch and had zero then 15 psi. This will be #4 if I count the factory pump. I have got to get my pusher installed, I have it in the garage. Just havent had the time to put it on, I hope it will help.

The truck was in a heated garage for about 5 hours this morning. Drove it in right off the highway. Fuel pressure is the same, in a heated garage or start up on a really cold morning.

Brett,

Before you go to the trouble of changing out the lift pump, I'd verify that the Westach sending unit hasn't failed. I've failed 4 or 5 (if not more) on the post-filter side, and many of them did just what you describe - bounced from 0 to full scale and everywhere in between. I actually carry 2 spare sending units now! :{

For the guage that is bounceing all over, also check the relay in the power distrabution box for the lift pump, I had one go bad on me last fall and I thought it was the lift pump, after installing the new lift pump I could not get it to prime, after I finally put air pressure in the fuel tank and cracked the injectors so it would start the fuel pressure gauge needle was still bounceing all over the place, I switched the horn and fuel pump relays around and everything has worked fine until this fall when I found out about the thick fuel during cold weather, since then everything has worked fine. I think some lift pumps are being replaced that do not need to be replaced as that was the case for me, but then I did replace 4 lift pumps in approxiamately 40,000 miles, I wonder how many I really needed to replace.

HA!!!! I've got you all beat. My injection pump died today. I've already had three new front pumps and two new rear pumps. Oh ya, my truck has 28000 miles. I guess if you want to play, you got to pay. :( :(

Just a thought: Of the people that have had single or multiple lift pump failures, how many regularly us a good fuel additive that increases the lubricity of the fuel? I wonder if the LP's are burning out because of low sulfur fuel??? Mine has 38K on it and I have 14psi at idle and 5-7psi WOT. I have been using Stanadyne fuel conditioners since I purchased the truck.

Thanks for the input guys, I put a new filter in tonight for good measure and beat around on the sending unit, fuel pressure is now fine, actually around 16 psi at idle and 10 WOT with the box on 5x5 (I have a 30psi westach) So I guess I will get with them and order 2 new sending units. You guys saved me a fuel pump change. I use additives but not a regular basis.

Thanks again

Brett

Power Service fuel additive on every fill up, winter and summer, except for one winter when I switched to Howe's additive.
