Alas, can I take this to mean the VP sucks? No not really I guess, as mine has been pretty reliable so far. Just couldn't resist.

Yoopervic,

Check out Geno's. I got the Westach fuel pressure guage to go with my other Westach guages. My new lift pump is around 15. 5 at idle and if I really stand on it, pressure will drop to around 7. Once you have a relative reading on your truck, just keep an eye on it to make sure you catch it before it goes dead the next time. Talk to any of the guys at Geno's about installing it but make sure they give you clear instructions on attaching the hose to the schrader valve.

CFowler, now that's funny. Probably wasn't to you at the time, but is entertaining when read when I'm off the road. Maybe you have to have been throwed out of a few places in your life to really appreciate this. Well, a guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do. Thanks.

Cheers,

Lift Pump Pressure Sensor Kit

Hey All! I just finished installing a LP low pressure warning system, took about an hour. It uses an electric sending unit calibrated at 8 lbs to light the in cab warning indicator. Sending unit can be mounted at the inj pump or outlet of fuel filter, I chose the inj pump and put the test port/banjo in the tool kit for future use. The system cost $80 and change shipped with wire, ends, banjo, sending unit, etc. Anyone wanting the kit number and phone number for ordering contact me at; -- email address removed --. Tom

He checked with a mechanic that told him that was all BULL. The LP was electric and when it quit the engine would not run, just like a plugged fuel filter.

Who's correct here??

When mine "quit", I had 80k miles on the '99. The truck would still run but wouldn't go over 60mph. drove it that way for 20k miles before I found a dealer who diagnosed the problem correctly. I heard everything from water in the fuel to bad injectors. The WILL run with a dying pump- but I guess sometimes the failure is catastrophic and completely shuts everything down.

I went thru 6 lift pumps and 2 injector pumps in 150,000 miles, I now have a FASS System lift pump. My truck starts faster and runs smoother than it ever did before.

I also have a friend with a 01 and he has always ragged me and my lp saga as he was a 70,000 miles and never had a problem, and turned down all attemps for me to check his presures, that I must have gotten a lemon, why eles would CHRYSLER not have sent him a recall or mantiance notice.

Avast ye say matey, he calls me one a Sunday Morn, in a panic, he and the wife & kids are broke down in a camp ground in North Mississippi, and the POS wont start. Four hours later I show up, check presure and its 0, go figure, Mr Big Poop always brags his truck has never been in the shop for any thing, he changes his own oil, and cant tell you where his lift or injector pump are even at.

Any way I put my spare lift pump on truck and she starts right up. I get the hugs and kiss from the wife and kids and he gets the bill at Ryans for lunch.

lift pump

My first lift pump lasted until 70k now on second pump 11 months later and 22k. These pumps just don't last. When I turn key on for inlet heater I thought my lift pump used to cycle can anyone answer that ? When turning key on the only way pump will cycle is I bump starter then it will cycle if anyone can respond about this it might answer if I have another problem.

Thanks

Denny

lift pump woes

Hi,

After reading these posts, I have decided to get a pressure gage and a spare lift pump. I just bought my 99 3500, had to order the owners manual and I also ordered a service manual, which isn't in yet. How much can I expect to pay for a lift pump in Canada? Also, can I get it from cummins instead of the dealer? I got my fuel filter from cummins for $18, the dealer charges much more or so I was told.

Thanks,

Clint:D

CEElliot-see Genos for cheaper replacement filters from fleetguard. Also as I am replacing my stock (10,000 miles on a new one) lift pump and filter system( I have 4 brand new,for my 99, fleetguard filters) with the FASS system I have them available. Offers?:D

New folks eh?

Fuel filters are 10-12 USD on the street. They are 40+ at the dealer. That's one reason they're called STEALERS.

LP's are around 140 USD at Cummins. They'll want the engine number at Cummins. No idea what the D/C store charges and don't care.

Fuel Pressure gauge is a must for 24v engines. Many times they provide enough pressure to run the engine but not enough to cool the VP. VP is cooled AND lubricated by diesel, not like the mighty P7100 which uses engine oil for some of its lubrication.

The stock LP can supply enough fuel for higher HP engines IF you remove the five banjo fittings as I have. Search "Wildcat Max Flow".

Search for more info. There are thousands of posts on this subject.

Briar Hopper (Tom) sells a temporary use test gauge. Call Black Mountain Diesel for details.

Well, I have the same sad story, '98 24 valve, had hard starting in in hot weather, took it to the dealer, who said an "adjustment to the computer" would fix it. I specifically asked about the lift pump or injector pump, as usual he said no problem. In fact he told me they don't even carry lift pumps, because they are so rarely the problem. Seemed fixed, until I took a trip to a hotter area. Had same problem, took it second dealer who wanted $3000 to replace injector pump, telling me that the lift pump was fine. Had truck towed to a good independent diesel fuel injection shop, who replaced the VP44, tested the lift pump under load, and found it was at 2 psi, and replaced it also. Total cost $1600. Truck has run perfectly ever since. Lesson, if you're not going to do it yourself, find a good independent diesel fuel injection shop where that's all they do.
