Hey guys,

I sure have been happy with the Dealer in Laramie. Bought my truck from them. . beat all the ,Idaho,NM,OK, dealers by about $2000.

They have never quibbled on any warranty work. (New transmission was a biggie. )

If you need a little smoke blown to make you feel good,it is the wrong place. They are pretty laid back,no razzle, dazzle.

Fuzz, what's the name of your dealer in Laramie, WY???

Oxy1,

I had my gauges (plural) installed by Advanced Diesel Technology Andy and Doug are great guys and very knowledgeable. I had 3 gauges, fp, pyrometer, and boost in a 3 pod on top of the dash. On my truck in sits near the windshield amost midway between the left and right pilars. The pod never obstructs my view but the gauges are very visible. I like my setup much better than the A-pilar pod. Each to his own tho.

If you don't have a fp gauge you are doing a disservice to yourself. If you can install then just buy the gauge.

Happy trails to ya.

Life is short, go fast and live on the edge.

Thanks Steve.

I think some of your links on that old thread are outdated now, but I got the idea. It did however just knock me upside the head this evening to just pipe into the 1/8 ports on top. DUH! Last night I was thinking [of] something to fit between the banjoes and the housing or something to this idea. Also was just wondering if there is a setup made especially for these trucks. The answer is "not yet" I see.

I don't need to monitor mine at all times as I am not in competition for any strange reason, however this idea would have really helped me out in the past.

I thought aboot this for a bit and looked around (not far) and had a 0-15# mech guage setting right here beside the 'putor. Not sure why it was laying there, but has been there for at least a cpl yrs. Leftover from an old grinder like 5 yrs ago. I can screw that on my housing and be set good enough for at least the time being. Maybe soon someone will have a snazzy kit, and maybe I'll think aboot buying it then. Or maybe not. :D Simplicity rules in my book! Just need to remember to check it occasionally.

Thanks for the ideas!!!!

BTW, can anybody let me in why I cannot expect a $100 low pres pump to last more than one oil change (as some of you here seem to have experienced)? Where are they making these things? China?

Lift Pump

My lift pump quit at 1450 miles (no, there aren't any "0"s missing!). It's my first diesel, so I didn't even have time to think about gauges! As soon as the weather warms up a bit, I'm going to do it Five star dealer took a week to get a replacement.

lift pumps wy.

My lift pump wen't two weeks ago. The dealer here in casper replaced it right away, The cummins tech here in cas. keeps them in stock! GO FIGURE!. Ihave never had a problem with the dealer here in casper. The dealer Cummins tech here in cas. has his own aftermarket cummins BOMB shop! Let me know if you need his number,(its not the dealer# he he). OH,i had 29000 on the cummins when the lift pump quit.

Ox, the problem with having the gauge under the hood is that you won't be able to monitor the pressures under load or at WOT. Many people have had good pressures (myself included) sitting there at idle but once you're driving down the road they would go down to zero. Also many pumps start to fail intermittently, it will run ok most of the time but occasionally will die off - you'd never find that with an under hood gauge. The reason that most of us have come up with as to why they die is because they are in the wrong location. Federal Mogul designed them to be a maximum of 3 feet from the fuel source and to push fuel to the engine. On our trucks with it mounted on the engine it's more like 10-12 feet from the source and is sucking it from the tank - this is why many of us have gone to pusher pumps (either a helper pump or an outright replacement). So it's a case of bad design IMO. I went through 4 lift pumps in 60,000 miles (and was driving on a bad one for about 20,000 of those miles before I found the first bad one  ) before I did something permanent about it.

Putting a setup like mine together is really not hard on your '99 - it's more difficult on the 00+ trucks because of where the test ports are located and the fittings necessary. It only took me about an 2 hours to install my gauge and that included making the bracket for the senders (and polishing it :D ).

I got that gauge on there now. 5 minute job once I got all the right tools to the truck. It will suffice for now, but you may very well convince me to do something better in the future. This cost me $zip. I like those upgrades! 14. 8# when not runing on a 15# guage. I have not started it yet (might be a few days for that yet). I wasn't gunna start it in the cold just to see the pres.

I believe I too was running for about 20K miles ona bad one too. I ran it out of fuel (OK, crucify me) about a yr ago. COULD NOT get that daggum thing to pump the fuel up. Ended up having it towed to a local shop (2 hours away) and they messed with it for 4-5 hours before they got it to pump.

Knowing what I know now, I woulda just towed it to my uncles (2 blocks from where I ran out believe it or not) and put on a pump there. But I was clueless as to the trouble. I knew it was a "getting fuel up to the filter" problem, but a feb night alongside a freeway exit ramp is not the time/place to research the problem eh.

Can a guy run something like a "Holly" type elec pump? I had a truck back in '87 that I had trouble with vapor lock in. (bad gas I think) I installed an elec pump (brand?) back on the frame rail and only lit it up when it started sputtering. I'm pretty sure that pump wasn't quite as salty as this one, but that was 15 yrs ago too I guess. Doo those not get quite enough fuel pres? Or why isn't everybody going that route?

You need a pump that is rated for continuous duty. In my experience Holley pumps are only good for about 100 hours or so (we run them on off road trucks that aren't used that often). If you do a search on "lift pumps" (pour a BIIIIG drink and be prepared for a lot of reading, you may need a cooler full!) you'll see all the options that have been tried. There have been a number of aftermarket pump solutions tried including Holley, Barry Grant, Summit, and Mallory (I'm sure I'm missing some there). Others have moved the stock Carter (now Federal Mogul) back by the tank and still others (myself included) have added a pusher pump (a lower pressure Carter/Federal Mogul) back by the tank in addition to the stock one at the engine. I'll let the guys that have run some of the other options speak to their results for themselves. As for me I now have about 40,000 miles on the helper pusher pump setup and it's still running great. Warning - some have concerns with what they consider high fuel pressures with this setup, I see a max of 19 psi and a low of 16 psi at WOT. I've checked with Dodge and Cummins engineers and they both said those pressures wouldn't be a problem. JMHO
