Thursday, the weather warmed up to 68, so I finally quit procrastinating, and hooked up my AutoMeter Fuel pressure gauge. My pressure readings looked funny, and I mentioned to Steve St. Laurent online that night that I was showing 7 psi at idle, and zero at WOT. I knew even before he told me...
A visit to my local Dodge dealership, Hatfield Chrysler, proved fruitless, they refused to believe there was a problem, if the truck still started and ran... they would not even look in parts stock to see if they had a pump in stock ! I tried to explain about the TDR and how I knew these pupms would go bad, but only got a lot of head shaking, and a "we'll test the pressure for you on Monday" .
I need the Ram Monday and Tuesday, I'm in the middle of an electrical job on a new log home, got contractors breathing down my neck... don't want to deal with clowns that won't listen, while they spend all day learning what I just told them, and really don't feel like unhooking the Edge fron the injection pump(but they're probably too dumb to check for it, unless someone at DC tells them to look for it)Just as well, I don't feel like being dishonest, even if they are stupid, and deserve it:D ... so off to Louisville, and Cummins Cumberland I go, and get a new lift pump, $132. 00 plus tax, comes to $140 sumpin'...
Put it in myself last night, and sure enough, my pressure at idle now shows 14 psi, and doesn't fall below 8 at WOT, so the lift pump WAS either dead or dying.
Since I want to play, I don't mind paying, but I'm disgusted I waited this long before checking fuel pressure, that was not very smart. Y'all with fueling boxes, I wouldn't wait to check the pressure... I've found a JIC stem hydraulic type fitting from Parker HydraMotion, that will fit the Schraeder valve. I'm thinking about putting together a hose and fittings kit, to enable anyone who wants one, to hook up an electric fuel pressure gauge, with the sending unit mounted remotely from the injection pump.
I'll do it if there's enough interest shown, strictly as a favor to fellow members, not interested in becoming a vendor right now, :D... Unless I can confirm that trucks older than the 2000 model have the Schraeder valve on the injection pump,I'll need to limit it to 2000 & 2001 models... (anybody care to educate me?)
Brandon in California, you asked me for the details, I need to go back to the Parker store, and get a better part number to send you... I can mail you a fitting, and the parts numbers on EVERYTHING I used.
No leaks with my system.

Glad to see you got it fixed Briar. Its frustrating when you have to ask permision or beg to get your truck fixed. Would'nt it be nice to have what I call "go fu&$ yourself money". Thats when you have so much money, you can afford to tell idiots like that to go f&^$ themselves! Take all the numbers off your old one and toss through their showroom window..... they'll be a little nicer the next time someone comes in wanting one replaced.

Chad, toss it through the showroom window? heehee, already thought of that. It'd be more fun to snitch a spare pump off one of the new ones in the back storage lot. #ad
But 1-2 in County lockup ain't worth saving $140, LOL. I'm used to the ignorance around here, it's part of the reason I bought a Cummins, I can fix most anything on there myself, or have access to people I trust to fix the rest...
Brandon, no problems so far with the AutoMeter gauge & sending unit, as far as "spikes" go... Really happy with my AutoMeters.
Chad recommended doing the hookup his way, (spliced into the lines)and that sounds better, even leaves the valve free for a factory service test gauge, but the easy Briar-type way (lazy)was to hook into the Schraeder valve. I can always change it later, the important thing is I got off my hillbilly bum and got it hooked up...

Don't beat yourself up over it too much Tom! You should probably sleep better now #ad
. I know I was sick when I first installed my gauge and found out I'd been running on a dead lift pump for quite some time. As to the fittings, the schraeder valve at the injection pump is just on the 2000+ trucks. For 98. 5 and 99's you just need an 1/8" npt to hose barb (pics on the thread below). For anyone looking for information on how to hook up a fuel pressure gauge check out this thread https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb//Forum3/HTML/002205.html . I have pictures of my install on there on my '98. 5 using a Stewart Warner gauge and senders.

Could you please post the Cummins part number for the lift pump? The parts guys here are a bunch of headscratchers.
Thank you,
burndog

Headscratchers, we got a bunch of those down here. No mechanics, just kids promoted from their $5. 50 /hour job at Chuck U. Farley's Tire and Wheel...
I'll post the Cummins part number on here when I get home from work.

Briar we got fuel press being monitored on 4 trucks full time now we just used the earls fittings, Be cautious about readings from schraeder at pump, the spa's didn't like the pressure spikes and give faulty readings, no too sure about other brands(analog type)
