MAleshire,

I was also at a loss as to what the washer was. I talked to my dealer and they knew nothing about it and it did not show it on their parts computer. I will go and buy one tomorrow as soon as the cummins shop opens. Thank you!

WD

WD, the parts guy at the Cummins shop in Ft. Worth had to order mine from the factory. Shipping overnight UPS will cost more than the o-rings. They were $4 and change a piece. I ordered two.

WD, were you able yo order the o-ring? I got a call from the Cummins parts guy today, he said that it is not readily available. I need the part or a reliable alternative.

Sorry, I missed this thread. Been busy with other stuff. Thanks for the suggestion. I will use the pictures. This little washer/gasket/whatever has sold a lot of lift pumps. Sometimes you can stop the leak by just snugging it up a little bit, but when it's damaged like yours that won't work. If you can not find the proper part then replace the fitting on that the line connects to with a barbed fitting and use a longer hose in place of the supply rubber hose. Rig a support of some kind for the hose where the steep pipe is mounted. I have a tank selection valve so my steel line is not there any more.

Thanks Joe. The barbed fitting sounds better than buying the whole line and hoping a gasket comes with it.

I have updated my write up to include a bit more info about this aggravating washer. Plus a paragraph about adjusting the idle. Emal me at -- email address removed -- if you want a copy. Remember, if you find something that is not clear or just plain wrong PLEASE let me know.

GAmes,

I ordered one from my cummins dealer and even tho it wasn't here in Fairbanks, he had several in Anchorage. Mine should be here Monday morning. The parts guy said it would be about 7 bucks. I ordered the one from the part number of MAleshire's. Its called a grommet. If you still need one and want me to pick one up for you, let me know.

Thanks WD. I passed on the location to the Cummins guy here. In the meantime I bought a barbed fitting to use if needed. I'm down for another part, so I can wait a little while. One thing that concerns me is the ID of the barbed fitting is only 1/4 inch, so the hose flow area decreases from . 11 sq. in to . 05, less than half. Even though I am not high HP, I do need full throttle at times and I don't know if the restriction would be a problem.

The good news is I'm getting a lot of points for completion of honeydos. :-laf

GAmes,

If you are accumulating and saving all those honeydos to use at a later date, just remember, one "bad boy" wipes out a hundred "honeydos". Be careful :-laf

My new fuel tank module came today. I got everything back together in the fuel system. Ran out of daylight to reinstall the starter. I went with the barb fitting for a temp fix. I'm not crazy about the way I had to route the rubber hose, so I'll keep the order active for the grommet, just cancel the overnight shipping. By the time I am due a fuel filter change again perhaps it will be here. Looking good so far. A solid stream of fuel from the bleed hole and loud squeaking from the OF valve when I put the bleed bolt back in. The honeydo list is nearly finished too!:-laf

GAmes,

I replace my grommet that is on top of the fuel heater and the old one was cut, cracked and had a gouge out of it. The new grommet was 5 and change.

That was about what I paid for mine, plus the overnight shipping charges#@$%! They got to me about 6 hours after I had buttoned up the truck and packed my stuff for a job. I went for a 1300 mile test drive with the temp fix and all is well. Next fuel filter change I'll reinstall the hard line with the new grommet.

I wouldn't be surprised if your old pump is still good.

just replaced the lift pump on mine. . it was puking fuel out of the 2 dreaded gaskets... and the main problem was the a/c when it was on the whole truck was shuddering like i needed motor mounts. . swapped the pump. . took 4 hours and i dont have the problem anymore

Hi Guys

I just finished writing a 3 1/2 page article on the Cummins fuel system and lift pump. This in depth article, covers the basics of the lift pump and why it's effciency is VERY LOW. This translates into low fuel pressure at WOT. Article number two will deal with the details, on what you can do to make make your Cummins fuel system more efficient. Having higher fuel flow and fuel pressure will make HP improvements much easier. I hope you like the article!

Feel free to send this article to your diesel friends. I want these tests to be in the hands of diesel owners and performance entusiasts.

All you have to do, to read this important article, is click this link.

I converted to one FASS pump around 5 years ago and still have 16 psig downstream of the fuel filter today. I know the cost is high up front, but it doesn't take too many lift pump swaps to spend more...
