The lift pump on my '03 decided to take a vacation on me Saturday afternoon. Turn the key on and nothing happens... . no buzzing of the pump I mean. It's DEAD.

Main concern is will parts stores carry these yet or is it a lovely DEALER ONLY ITEM? I've heard they're about $275... is this number high or low? I need to get one first thing Monday morning so I can get back on the road. I feel I was pretty lucky to get 165,000 miles out of the lift pump.

You might want to think about a set of aftermarket banjo's that flow more fuel. This might help an OEM pump last longer (at least thats been my luck with 2 trucks and no LP failures).

Or you could just buy a FASS and be done with it!

BD has an auxillary lift pump kit for $265... I assume the main lift pump still has to be operating for the auxillary pump to be useful?

This Thread makes me feel much better, I was reading about the 3rd Gen. liftpump failures and with vacation time coming around I was getting the urge to buy a spare.

But with you guys getting over 100,000 on yours I think I can relax for a while

I only have 37,000 on mine. :)

All these high-mileage posts makes me even more confident of my '03... ... but I only have 28k on mine right now. :D

150-200k miles on a lift pump is pretty good IMO. 275 seems pretty high, when more people start making it hopefully the price will go down. Check with cummins dealers too... . I can't wait till the in tank 05 POS fuel pump goes out. Thats gonna be a pricey little chrysler part... :-laf

Why?

Why do you think the in tank pump will go bad?? It is a pusher, which pumps like to do, and submerged in fuel for cooling.

Do you believe the pump is poor quality?? Have you looked at one? The factory Carter pump lasts a long time when mounted down by the fuel tank, I suspect the submerged one will last a very long time.

The only way I can see these in-tank pumps going bad is if the idiot behind the wheel neglects to give it fuel to pump!! No pump likes to run dry.

An in-tank pump should have been on our trucks since '98. 5.

I vote get a DPP/FASS pump only kit and be done with it

Mine might make a little noise sometimes, But I am always happy that it's failure rate is super-low (from what i've seen)

Greg,

Maybe your not familiar with the "infamous ebottema" and his bashing of newer CTD's. He seems to get off on making it a point to bash the electronics and improvements of the newer trucks. He does not even own a 3G and though we cannot stop him from posting or being in the 3G forum, you can & need to just ignore him. His bashing and comments are useless and unwarranted.

I'm not saying that pump will go bad any quicker than the 03 style. I do believe it it probably not as good since it has too much stuff in one package. Fuel gauge sender and pump. Oh yes, running the truck die will kill that pump :-laf

The problem with the in-tank pump will be the price from dodge only (non cummins part) and either the bed will need to be lifted or the tank dropped to replace. It might be better thought up but their are always good and bad things about that. .

Tscwab- I don't own a 3rd gen, i never said i hated the 3rd gens, i just hate the electronics, get your facts straight. I'm infamous for being right you mean... :p

Somebody here has never even SEEN the pusher pump in a stock '05 tank, yet insists it's a poor design bound to fail and cost a lot of $$ to replace. Personally, after inpecting mine when I did the fuel tank vent mod, I was surpised at the simplicity of the design. Sure, I'll probably have to add a bigger pusher someday when I do injectors and/or box, but for now I have no doubt this will be a MUCH more reliable design.

160,000 miles... lift pump is bad... . motor still strong. Man I love these trucks. 160,000 miles used to mean your looking for a truck replacement. :D

Here here!

The price of a lift pump isn't much at >125,000 miles. My 'bullet proof' 1995 12v needed a new mechanical LP at ~135K. I am very glad to read that people are getting > 150k on their stock lift pumps.

Water pumps, starters, alternators, lift pumps: these things all have a life span.

Still, being the paranoid-type guy I am I may just pick up a spare LP for the emergency kit.

The main problem I'm having with my truck is staying out of it. It is a pleasure to drive.
