So Big H316, now that the pump died, does the truck still run normally? I have heard different opinions/rumors on how or if the trucks will run with a bad lift pump. I know Chevy doesn't have a lift pump on it's Duramax so is the reason Dodge has one is for ease of filling the fuel filter housing after a filter change or what? On my 01' I carried an extra lift pump but if guys are getting this much life out of the stock "crappy" lift pump (feel better Ebottema or whatever your name is... ) I don't feel it's necessary to carry one. I like the idea of the new lift pump being in the tank, but depending when it goes and how full your tank is may change a persons outlook...

Ebottema, I don't know you from Adam but I think the reason the guys here get ticked off at you is because you come in to this forum and poop on everybody's parade. Personally I don't care what you say, I have my own opinion. What I won't do is run around and tell everyone it. If you have facts or a real life experience, that's a different story but going off of what you think when you don't own what you are talking about is annoying...

Thank goodness I caught it in the driveway. The truck did however run, maybe it was just using the fuel from the canister but I shut it off immediately to avoid any other failures. Paid almost 300 smackers for the new pump only to find out 3 days later I could have bought it from the local Cummins dealer for $162!!!! Is that not crazy? Anyways, 30k miles later the new lift pump is still going strong.

Wait just a tick...

When I turned the key to the on position on my truck the other day (really hot day), I did not hear the DPP pump run for the usual 2 seconds, Well I fired it up anyway, and about 3 seconds I heard the pump going

Are you sure the pump was bad? And can you even hear it when the truck is running? I mean is the fact that you turned the key on and nothing happened (no buzzing of the pump) for sure mean its DEAD???

After I did not hear mine, but yet it kicked on after the engine fired, I shut it down and then tried again, well this time it did do the 2 second thing

wierd

When I turned the key to the on position I waited for the light to go off and then started the engine. Only then did it dawn on me that i did not hear the pump, which had started to sound a little funny. I shut the truck off and cycled the key again... . nothing... Started the engine for a short few seconds and shut it down again. Checked the canister and sure enough, very little fuel. I knew then the pump was dead.

You are right about the price of the BD aux. lift pump price. The OEM lift pump price is $140. I have both lift pumps on my 2001 Dodge and the OEM pump was just replaced. I always carry a spare OEM pump. A mechanic can install the pump in one hour for about $90 labor. Also, always watch your fuel pressure gauge. If the needle moves down and up you need to replace the OEM lift pump. I am happy with this backup system and I'm not worried about my truck not getting enough diesel fuel after only 40,000 original miles.

What pump are you referring... the 3rd gen lift pump (on the fuel filter housing) is $307 from Cummins. The 2nd gen lift pump is $162 from Cummins.

I know, I just checked this week.

My only concern is that exactly... dodge is using a pump designed for gasoline to pump a more viscous diesel fuel... causing extra strain on the pump and eventually a short life. Although, as long as the fuel level in the tank is not run really low all the time, the fuel will keep the intank pump cooler, thus extending the life if it was indeed designed for diesel fuel... there should also be a lot less vibration too.

I myself prefer the external pump (glad my 600 has one now)... for nothing else than ease of changing. I have read people getting as little as 20k on the in tank pumps as of lately... not a good sign, but everything new has some flaws/bugs to work out.

Actually if tank is close to empty and you have a clue to what yourdoing dropping the tank(really just one end)and pulling a pump etc. is not very hard or time comsuming. Seen techs do them in 30 minutes or so and only fuel loss was what came out with the module.

My '03 lift pump went out at 5,000 miles. The dealer told me this was a "rare" failure. Incidently, the truck now has 27,000 without a fuel failure. 160,000 plus miles on an '03??? Wow! Mine is a garage queen!

Well, I had my injection pump replaced at 33k because it was leaking out the wiring harness leads... they told me it was the only one they had even seen do this... and only the second pump to have been replaced on the east coast... this was 6 months ago, but dealers don't always know what they are talking about either. For all the good ones, there is always a lemon.

I was considering buying a FASS because the factory LP were "unreliable", but now, got me thinking about just getting a spare factory pump as backup. 150k is better than the 2nd gens were getting... that double what I ever got out af any of the six 2nd gen LPs I installed.

Until I got a third car, I averaged about 65k a year in normal driving... not work related.

Don Brundage

Gents,

My fuel pressure, T'd off outlet side of fuel filter, is dropping to zero psi with moderate acceleration. Scary. Under even any strain, like an uphill grade, the pressure will drop to 2 or less psi. Took it to the local Dodge dealer, and went for a ride with the tech. Showed him 1/2 psi on the gauge. His computer readout still showed the CP3 putting out normal pressure. Obviously when the pressure goes to zero or close, I back off the throttle, and the pressure will slowly rise and prevent CP3 cavitation. Since the computer hasn't kicked a code, then, this one dealer will not do anything. If the lift pump fails and cavitates and ruins the CP3, then they will do something. I am under the extended warranty and broke, so I am stuck.

I am planning on putting a pusher Mallory pump by the tank. Anyone know where I can get the adapter that allows you to hook a fuel fitting to the fuel filter bowel?

r/Don

You may be too late. My dealer says that the LP isn't sold anymore, that the in-tank retrofit is the only way to go.

So, I have officially eased my mind. I ordered a LP from Cummins to the tune of $304 and it is expected in two weeks. I have an in-bed aux tank from American and am dependend on an engine mounted LP>

The one from Cummins is used in more applications than dodge. I doubt that Cummins will end production of that unit since dodge is using their own in-tank pump.

I still think I'm going with a FASS... that way, I'm not as dependant on Cummins or DC for that LP.

I think there's a great deal of wisdom in that statement. I am gradually building up a "roadside fuel pump change kit" containing the few tools and parts I would need to change out a fuel pump (or associated electronics) roadside. Plus my entire system uses industry-standard fittings so I can theoretically get them anywhere in North America.

With the statements below, is this an adapter that replaces the factory LP if it is removed so the stock fuel fuel filter, WIF light and heater can still be used ?

I got mine from Scotty (http://www.scottyairsystems.com/). You'd have to call him, because I don't think it's on his website. Cost me 60cdn ($55US). There are other places too, but I like the cut of Scotty's jib.
