I read somewhere on this forum a Cummins part number for a third gen 2004. 5fuel filter mounted lift pump and cannot find the post with the search function. I tried to order the pump from Cummins and they gave me a replacement part number of 3968188 which I ordered.

The pump is different with no mounting brackets and has a connector plug and wiring harness for the power. There is a female 3/8 imput port on one end and an output port on the other end. The pump is shaped like a cylinder around eight inches long. Anyone have any experience with this pump. I am sure it would work with the proper adaption kit.

Thanks Bill

You got the right pump. I would call Geno's Garage. Read pg. 74 in TDR issue 56. It says Geno's found a bracket that works. Give 'em a call.

Lift Pump

Thanks to all for your reply. I talked to Geno's and they do not have a mounting bracket or adaptor for the 3968188 so I will get a Fass which comes with the necessary adaptor and hardware. I am looking for a backup only.

Handy tool for 3rd gen lift pump replacement

just got finished replacing lift pump 2004. 5 at 72985mi.

I had a 5mm L-shaped allen wrench.

For those of with a spare lift pump,,,awaiting failure,,,

add these to your tool inventory,,,,if not already there

(a 5mm allen wrench, 1/4" drive socket).

(a 3/8" fuel line removal tool)

I know it sure would have come in handy.

My allen wrench did the job but, I will be adding a 1/4in drive allen socket to my collection.

No indication of failure other than the truck ran real good with a full tank of fuel, for the past several tanks. It failed with no warning with a quarter tank of fuel.

Local dealership wanted unofficially $1000. 00 for the retro-fit.

Geno's = $179. 00

I would not bother with the updated intank pump, Get a FASS HPFP. The filter mounted one has been discounted.
Thats what I was going to suggest, once you go with the intank pump, you need replace it with the original pickup mechanism, if you decide to go with the FASS after the intank pump is installed.

Just replaced my filter mount pump with a Airdog Raptor and GDP 2mic Filter.

I have the extra Geno's filter mount pump if anyone is in need. :)
