came back from a 1500 mile trip this weekend and the fuel pressure had droped 5lbs from starting trip until I got home. I just figured I needed a new lift pump but figured to change filter and that solved all problems I got 14. 5lbs at idle and 11lbs at WOT using only the EZ

Duane,

how many miles did u have on the old filter? Reason I ask is I have about 1500-2000 on my current filter and in the past week have lost a couple of psi across the board. Lift pump was new only 5 k ago, so I am hoping that it is the filter/bad load of fuel last week.

Thanks

Can't always go by mileage - fuel quality is the base issue - a bad tank of fuel can clog a filter in the first 10 miles... On the other hand, I got 23,000 miles or so out of my first one, and only changed it then because I didn't want it falling apart in the housing due to old age...

Tank -> RACOR 690 -> lp -> ff -> VP

Get all the crap out before it ever has a chance to get into anything.

The 690 will get ALL the water out. If you got a bad load of fuel, I would drive 10 miles or so, drain the water from the 690, drive 10 more miles, drain the water from the 690, repeat the process till all the water is out. And your fuel system doesn't get screwed up with contaminants. The OEM filter soaks up water, not sheading it like the 690.

I drain a sample from the 690 about every couple of weeks. Generally get about 1/2 a BB worth of water and a little particulate suspended crap. Guess what did not get into the fuel system?

Let the ff FILTER to 10 microns (I use the 10 micron 690 so the only thing the OEM ff has to do is to get anything the lp or lines shead off).

CLEAN fuel has to help the system run ya gotta believe.

Bob your second filter will still filter 10 micron contaminates as the efficiency of the first is probably 98% or less at 10 micron. Plus they will filter "X"% or so of smaller stuff in the 5 micron range. So the dual fuel filters of the same rating actually help to enforce the 10 micron filtering. Your getting clean fuel.

Looks like I will change the filter. I drained some fuel off yesterday and this was the first time since I have had the truck, since new that I have actually gotten any water out of the drain. Usually it is just clean fuel.

I hate fueling up at a station that is not my "Usual", which happened on mothers day. PSI started to drop acouple of days later.

Is there anything else I should do? I run Stanadyne Performance with every tank. Should I double dose next tank? Should I run some biocide, or just run the tank through and it will be fine?

Thanks

Thats the reason I put the RACOR 690 in my fuel system.

The CFTDR has gone to 3 or 4 VP rebuilders as club outings. ALL the rebuilders said NO WATER!, EVER! How do you do that?, when you don't know the fuel stop and you have no choice but to fuel up there. The RACOR filters are (I think the only) filters that are patented that they remove water.

The water explanation went something like this. Water in the fuel tank goes through the lp and maybe yes or maybe no is caught in the OEM ff. I did not want to trust the OEM ff. Then the fuel water mix goes to the VP where it is pressurized to high pressure. The water turns to steam and grossly expands and over pressurizes the internals of the VP often breaking the high pressure side of the VP. If it does not break the VP it severly pits and erodes the tolerances and machined surfaces of the VP which then leads to premature pump failure.

This does not even address the LSF lubricity or anything like that. Just trying to keep the VP from self destructing.

The RACOR 690 flows 90 GPM which should be pleanty for moderate bombing. It gets the water OUT and does filter particulates, but getting the water out is why I did it. It also alows me to SEE the fuel and I can drain a sample easily. RACOR also has fuel heaters, WIF sensors and stuff like that, which I do not have on mine.

I saw it as a key element of keeping the VP running. Cost benefit was about $105 I think for the RACOR head and filter and a spare filter was $40 (I change the filter once / year) which I carry with a replacement lp and replacement OEM ff. Replacing a VP is like $1600 I think. You can get 30 micron and 10 micron cartridges. I do the 10 micron just trying to get the fuel as clean as possible before it gets into the lp / VP / injector system.

Peace of mind I guess. I plumbed mine in the forward under bed pocket on the drivers side.

it had about 15000 on it but like someone else said all it takes is one bad tank of fuel

Thanks
