Just to let you guys know... . The lift pump went out on our 89. It has always started good, but now that it got cold it'd start, idle for 15 sec and die then not even fire... Pull it in the shop, did a big no no... starting fluid, and it finally started. I thought it was maybe a fuel filter, but after changing that it still did the same thing, start idle for 15 sec then die and not start, only when it was cold. I took off the lift/transfer pump and that was it, the shaft wasn't connected to the rod anymore. Went to cummins and got a new one, bolted it on and now I hate to say this, but you all know it's true anyways, it starts better than dad's 98 and my 98. 5. I can't believe that the 1st gen trucks can only turn over half a turn and already be fired up.
Gotta like that. So if you're having a hard starting problem, check out the lift pump. It started in the summer, but the fuel must have been too thick to start in the cold we've been having. I'm kinda disappointed, it only lasted 350k... unlike my 24v that lasted a whopping 45k. Nothing like technology moving backwards.
