I took my lift pump off today, pulled the push rod out and fuel came out of the push rod hole. Does this mean i have a bad pump? The rod fits tight. From bench pumping it in a bowl of diesel it seems not to leak, but to me it seems fuel should not come out that hole.

Has the engine oil level increased? The lift pump is activated by the camshaft which is oil lubed. There should not be any fuel from the hole, just oil.

This pump is about 1-1. 5 years old. The oil level has never gone up. I see cummins changed the part# for the pump again.

 Do you mean that fuel came out when you pulled the rod out of the pump or when you removed the pump from the engine? I would think fuel coming out when the rod is removed from the pump is normal.

It's normal. The push rod is the piston that pushes the fuel. If you pull it out any fuel in the pump will run out the hole.
