Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Lift Pump Information Needed

First let me say I have been a member of TDR since 1999. I have an old 92 4x4 with 287k on her. G-trag fixed once and nothing major on anything. (still have it)



My question is that I recently picked up an 01, HO, 6 speed, with only 14k on it. Reading all the post on the vp44 problems on these should I replace the lift pump right now. If so should I relocate it back by the tank? Is there some special pump that you people would recommend that have replaced them. where would I get one etc. etc. Looking for information,

My original lift pump lasted for 32K miles. When I installed my DD II's the pressure dropped to 0 at WOT. On average I'd say 14K on a stock truck ought to be fine. I'd install a fuel pressure gauge, and maybe carry a spare pump if you want.

Check the fuel pressure often, no need to replace until the pressures drop under 8psi and some even report that as long as the vp44 is not drawing a vacum then things are o. k. You could always install a permanent gauge, which is what I preferr, more acurate than just sticking a guage on once and awhile and checking.



I would recommend changeing if it drops below 8psi, just my personal preference.



If going a long ways from home then I would carry a spare, just my recommendation, easy to change out on the road if need be.



I have replaced 4 lift pumps, the last one has lasted over 20,000 miles which is good for my truck since they arveraged 10,000 miles before. The latest pump number from cummins ends in 105, I can not remember the prefix numbers.

I have 99,500 on my stock LP... It has always been a little weak on psi. . but meets specs... I have a FP hooked up... only goes to 0 during long high setting runs... I do have a spare pump. . and I have a Wildcat big fuel line kit to install, to help the keep the pressure up... Check the Classifieds. . There are some good prices on some new Lift pumps there...
