Lift Pump Installation Question?

I'm about to install new lift pump. A question for those who have already done it. Is it easier from the top or bottom (removing starter?) It looks like a real "bear" from the top. Any other tips I should know before starting?

I have done dozens of them, and doing it from the top is FAR easier than doing it from the bottom. Just climb right up on top of the motor and reach down and switch it out. Be sure to have some rags and a drain bucket handy to catch any extra fuel.

I just changed mine out last week and removed the fuel filter assembly when I did it. This gave me all kinds of room to work and only took a few extra minutes, it also gives you a reason to check the filter.

Do it from the top. If you are changing lift pumps you might want to consider moving the pump back the the frame rail by the tank. Your pump will like pushing fuel much better than pulling.

Definately remove the fuel filter assy and do the job from the top. .



1/2-3/4 hour job TOPS!!!!!



Re priming the fuel system seems to take longer than the changeout itself!!!

How far do I have to go to "remove" the filter assembly? Can I just remove the mounting bolts and set it aside in the engine compartment, or should I take it all the way out of the compartment?

Yeah, just go ahead and "fold" it out of the way. Or you can take it completely out...

One more thing, be sure to put in a new fuel filter when you change the lift pump. Good thing to do, just out of general principle. Same thing when doing injectors--new fuel filter then too. It's only 10-15 bucks for peace of mind.

I just did mine a few days ago. Remove the 2 bolts holding the fuel filter assembly in place and let it drop down, then you will have better accsess. The hardest part i had was finding a wrench to fit on the rear banjo bolt since the steel brake lines are in the way. Other then that, its easy. When i was done i bumped the starter, waited 20 seconds and the truck started right up.

I don't know why anyone would go from underneath the truck. From the top, I do it in 20 minutes without removing the filter housing.

I think it also depends on your build as far as ease of access. I am 6'5 and have huge hands, i could bareley get one hand down to the pump without removing the fuel filter. If you have long skinny arms, lift pump replacement will be ALOT easier.
