1100 mi trip with new Quad Xzillaraider

45 days ago or so the dealer installed a new lift pump and injection pump on my 04, it now has about 111K miles... out of the 100K warranty..... I than followed this with my Holly Red pump at the tank..... to prevent this damage from happening again..... As I've stated on this sight... this truck pulls a large trailer 90% of the time.....

Yesterday while stopped I came back to the truck and it had a fuel puddle under the about 8" diameter... . it was idling in a rest stop... . I looked behind the front wheel to find that the lift pump was leaking... what looked like around the middle of the pump around the crimp on the seam... .

Further inspection today, finds that this is in fact the leak and seems to be a seam leak... . I don't have a pressure gauge on this truck... so I don't know what the fuel pressure is..... but the Holly Red won't do much more than 6-8 psi but has enough volume to provide plenty of fuel to the lift pump...

So I called the dealer today... . asked them if they had a warranty on their work and explained the problem... . first I was told that there was a 90 warranty on the parts and labor... . but as soon as they found out the truck... . an 04 was over 111K miles they said no... . there comment at first was the assumption that the truck was under the 100K mark... . I must be the first in the area with a truck over 100K for a 04... ...

So I asked them if they had a pump in stock that I could purchase... . """nope its a star part""" so I started another trip this afternoon... . going to put another 1000 miles on it before I get back... Do the dealers have lift pumps in stock..... for sale..... anyone tired the Cummins people.....

Any of you with an extra pump in the circuit had this problem..... Thanks for the input...

Sounds like the dealer needs to check their warranty administration book. ALL Mopar (not Mopar Performance) parts have a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty. It includes the labor if installed by the dealer, or can be exchanged over the counter, part for part, if sold over the counter. Reman powertrain has a 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty, and some Cummins reman parts have an even longer warranty. I'll have to check tomorrow to see what it is.

The service writer needs to write a Mopar Claim, and it gets processed just like a regular warranty claim. Technicians hate warranty work for some reason... it's a constant battle where I'm at. Some of them would rather sit there making nothing instead of getting paid to fix something by Chrysler.

Ask them to show you the warranty stating the 90 days. Fortunately, any other dealer can honor the 12/12,000 warranty.

Jim,

Are you saying the lift pump took out your injector pump in your original problem? I thought the 04 system was supposed to prevent lift pump failure from taking out the injector pump in the 04's and would not allow the truck to start or possibly not enable it to run?

Ryan... don't know if the Holley Red Pump has the specs to run the injection system... . works really well as a helper... but don't know about the whole thing... . On the other hand. . it's at tank and might work.....

I'll go in person to talk to them..... might start the story in a little differnent way and see what they say...

The truck started with a funny idle..... than would just die as it came back to idle... . if you thought about it you could catch the stall by holding the throttle pedal off idle... . but ran well at high speeds... . It was about to fall out of warranty so I took it in... . they played with it for 2 1/2 weeks... each part they put on was a star part... you know the drill... and each part didn't fix it... .

So I went in and found that all the stuff they'd done was going to be on my nickel... but all I wanted was a truck that worked. . I got to my salesman, and than the general manager and found that most of the time when I'd called the truck was out in the lot waiting on this or that... .

What they finally told me... was all the stuff they tried and installed would be left on the truck at N/C and the real problem was the lift pump... which had caused injector pump failure because of lack of fuel... . which has damaged the return fuel portion of the pump... . thats why the idle and other problems... . I drove the truck... . and it was fine... ... and the bill was no charge... . so after 2 1/2 weeks... and I might be stretching it here... might have only been 1 1/2 weeks... lets put it this way... I was upset... . knew they had a young tech working on it... ...

So after reading all the posts here... . I took the truck home and installed a holley red pump... actually bought 3... . 1 for my 01, 1 for my 04 and 1 for my 05... when I crawled under my 05 I found no lift pump..... and when to this board and found the lift pump was now in the tank... . so I have an extra pump... .

Steve... . I have a trailer with 8 tires... . will the tire sentry do the 6 tires on the truck and the 8 tires on the trailer... with one display in the cab... .

Factory spec is 38 GPH minimum lift pump flow to the injector pump. Don't need much pressure at all.

Jim,

I just spoke to Lee at Tire Sentry and he said they can accomodate your situation with 6 tires on your truck and 8 tires on your trailer. He said he would be happy to talk with you about it. His phone number is 818-889-1716. Their web address is tiresentry.com. I have had my system for 6 years and it works great. It has saved me at least 2 tires and the potential damage that a shredded tire can cause. Before I had the Tire Sentry I had a trailer shred that did over $800 to my trailer.

As far as the lift pump is concerned, it sounds like we still should have a gauge but have seen no information yet to know if the lift pump on these 04's will show a pressure reduction prior to failure. I understand that these lift pumps run at a lower pressure than the one did on my 99 so am still up in the air as what to do. Do you have any power enhancements on your truck? Mine is stock and I will probably leave it that way so was not too worried about it until I read your post.

Final update on the lift pump..... the pump leaks around the seam..... where the two half's come together..... and it now has 28K miles... 2x's DC warranty on parts... .

Got a new pump from Cummins NW here in Spokane... they had it on the shelf... . 315 bucks. . plus a 16 hose they say I will need..... Will get it changed this week... .

The truck is stock... but pulls a heavy trailer... . 18-20K trailer weight. . the truck has never seen 1 tank of fuel without a load...
