Was wondering about the average lifespan of the liftpump the 12valves? Where is a good location between the liftpump and the tank to install a pusher pump? I was thinkin the closer to the tank the better... ...

202k on my stock pump.

Problem with a pusher pump is that you must remove the fuel heater, it's designed for suction not pressure and will leak. Don't see that you need a pusher anyway, more of a 24 valve problem unless you're looking at 500+hp.

I didnt know that they would leak... thanks for the info. Do they tick or make any kind of indication besides fuel pressure dropping before they go out?

Lift pump

Had to replace mine at 113,000 miles. I didn't know it was bad until the fuel filter was changed and I could'nt get it to prime. Must have pushed the primer button 500+ times:mad: The truck was running fine until the fuel filter was changed. The mighty P7100 didn't seem to care that the lift pump was toast:D

Sometimes if the cam is in exactly the wrong place with the actuator lever fully depressed the manual primer won't work or is very slow. Just need to bump the starter to change the cam position.

Tried that mehtod and it still didn't prime. Even rigged a way to supply a slight amount of fuel pressure to the inlet of the lift pump and it still would not prime! Replaced the lift pump and guess what it primed right away:D

375k cliks and had to replace it.

just let go one cold morning on start up.

sounded like all bearings froze at the same time... what a racket :--)

Whats the cost

I have 207,000k on my 96 and wonder if this may happen sometime in the near future, so whats the cost on the liftpumps.

I'm kinda worried about mine as well. I have 220,000 on my truck and I don't know if it's been replaced. Winter's commin and I dont' want to be chainging a part I don't even know where it's located at 10 degrees in a foot of snow!

If you guys are thinking of keeping them for another 100k or so, you might want to keep a spare in the tool box if they're not too expensive down there.

My Dealer charged me $1,600. 00 as he also changed my fuel filter bowl because the drain valve holder thng at the bottom of it had snapped off.

I changed out my lift pump at 160,000 miles because the general concensus on TDR is that 12 valve lift pumps have an "average" life span of approximately 150,000 miles. No problem with engine performance and the pump was still good, no leaks, etc. I just want to perform the maintenance on my schedule, not on the side of the road. Cost: $165 for the pump.

Just changed mine last week - Paid $165. 00 for the part from a local Cummins parts house and it had 176,000 miles on it. I replaced it because it was leaking fuel from the weep hole.
