With DD2's and DD TTPM, how long should my stock lift pump and fuel pump last?

I just hooked up new gauges to mine while I was bombing it and included a fuel pressure guage. The needle does not get off of 2 lbs which is the lowest reading. I have always had trouble getting the fuel filter bowl to prime when changing the filter, etc... . I am picking up a new mallory fuel pump today for the truck.

The only thing that I can say is that I had to replace my lift pump at 7200 miles... . while the truck was still stock. BUMMER...

Changed my lift pump today, 19K... ..... may it rest in peace.

If you have decided that you are your own warranty station, you will not be disappointed with the Mallory pump. Head and shoulders over the POS Carter in my opinion. As soon as it warms up here #ad
I'll get that SPA setup that's collecting dust on my bench in and post my new lift pump pressures.

Hello Everyone,

I'll be installing my gauges,DTT mods, fuel lines in a few weeks,as soon as the snow melts. If my lift pump is weak I'll replace it. Where are you guys purchasing your mallory 4150 pumps from? Is it a direct replacment for the stock carter pump?? Does it require any return line plumbing, or just an inline regulator to control the psi. Thanks for your help.

Morphious, you mentioned having trouble priming after a fuel filter change. Where did you hook your guage up to get your fuel pressure. I've got a 99 with 57 thousand on it. bought it used, and i'm having trouble getting it to prime after a fuel filter change. Can someone tell me about the Mallory pump? where to get it and a price range? Thanks for any help.

I bought the mallory at the local race shop. paid 269 for it I think. I could have gotten it cheaper online, but did not feel like dealing with the wait on shipping. No, it is not a direct replacement. I am removing the old lift pump/connections and putting the new mallory back closer to the tank and running steel braid up to the fuel filter. I taped my fuel pressure gauge into the fuel filter which is right after the fuel pump. There are 2 plugs on the 99 one pre-filter and one post-filter. I'll let you know how it works when I get it connected. I also got a pressure regulator for it so that I could adjust the line pressure.

Thanks for the reply's, they help me understand. I've just got a couple of more questions. Please bear with me, i'm new to the diesel scene.

Looking at the way it was mentioned to wire one up to help get full voltage to it all the time, i'm going to assume that this pump runs the entire time the key is on. Correct?

What are some of the signs that a person should be on the lookout for in order to catch a failing lift pump?

Is the best way to check a lift pump, attach a fuel pressure gauge pre filter or post filter? What pressure should i have and what is considered low?

Thanks for the help guys!

7-10 at idle is acceptable. 5-7 going down the road. Start adding fueling boxes and other fuel system mods and the psi goes even lower. My lift pump would be fine one minute, go dead another, then work fine for a month again.

The lift pump supplies low pressure fuel to the injection pump. The injection pump uses diesel fuel for injection, lubrication, and cooling. If the lift pump dies, the injection pump will suck enough fuel from the tank to keep the engine running. However you will not have enough fuel for lubrication and cooling on the injection pump. On a diesel engine, fuel pressure is extremely important.

there is no DIRECT AFTERMARKET REPLACEMENT because of the metric thread banjo bolts and factory connector .

EDIT , i talked to tech at federal mogul/carter , pump is ok at max pressure continuious running , its the length of line to the tank , should be less than 3 feet and the banjo bolt restriction that is killing these pumps , also they told be that can be rebuilt .

edit ... skip the keyed source , that was a bad idea i assume , carter told me the factory changing voltage will not hurt the pump .

as far as adding a regulator , you may not need it BUT CUTTING IT TO 13 IS PROBABLY A GOOD IDEA , the stock pressure is 13psi , the aftermarket pumps are at 15psi , this should be fine , though the relief on the injection opens at 14psi - 16psi , an aftermarket pump that supplies 140GPH should handle that fine .

haven't done to much experimenting with this as of yet , but this is info i have gotten from the hi HP guys that have . and the edits are after calls to the pump manufacturers ...

Be aware that the reason the computer limits the start fuel to approx 7 psi by the lift pump is to aid the VP44 pumping plungers to charge with fuel. If you direct wire the pump for full start pressure you will likey cause hard starting problems.

Mongoose, the pre-filter port is where you want to check the lift pump pressures. The numbers Chad gave are what you can expect from an "average" lift pump. Mine finally died last month with 26,000 miles on it. I had 4 PSI showing on the gauge at idle, and it still ran just fine, so of course the dealership didn't want to replace it. I had to alter my complaint from the pressure being out of specs to a "hard to start" issue. That gave the service writer something he could understand. The low pressure complaint meant nothing. "Hard to start" was something he could relate to. It took six working days for the pump to come in. The pressure at idle now is 13 PSI. There is a discernable difference in how the the engine performs with the fuel pressure restored to specifications. Wonder how long this replacement pump will last... .

TopFuel, did they replace your pump under warrenty? If so, was it under the dodge warrenty or the cummins 100,000 mile warrenty? Thanks for the help guys!!!

Mongoose, it was covered by the Dodge warranty. (less than 36,000 miles) I was disappointed with the length of time it took to get an "overnight" part shipped in. The first pump to arrive was incorrect and didn't match the box #'s it was shipped in. (Thanks Daimler) There was nothing the dealership could do about that. I DID supply a Geno's fuel filter to the dealer when a visiting zone rep. DEMANDED that the mechanic replace the fuel filter along with the lift pump. The old filter had all of about 800 miles on it. The mechanic was VERY apologetic about it. The dealership fuel filter co$t would have maxed out 3 credit cards, prevented my children from attending college and required me to borrow 50% of my 401K account. It would have required a second mortgage just to cover the sales tax..... Seriously, my truck is running great now and I have established what I hope will be a lasting friendship with a knowledgable dealership mechanic who's stuck in the system just like the rest of us.

my 2000 truck has 32000 miles on it and the lift pump has been replaced twice under the warranty and it makes me worried as once it quit at 11:00 pm and i had to walk home 5 miles 2nd time it limped back home, some thing is really not right with the design of that pump and also cummins/dodge took the inherent reliability of diesel away from it by introducing electricals and electronics and seems like they did not conduct extensive tests before introdcing it on the market i really wish there was a way to put the mechanical pump on my engine without making big changes,if possible i will do it in a heart beat, any way 2 cents #ad

Thanks for the info Topfuel! Guess i'm out of luck in getting mine replaced under warranty, 57,000 miles!!! Is the general consensus to replace it with an aftermarket pump? Does anyone know what a replacement would be through Dodge? How does the aftermarket pumps compare to factory pumps? More or less reliable?

mongoose read the postings under holley pump
some good info there,i myself been thinking of installing a BOSCH pump that most european cars use on the gas fuel injected engines,it is very reliable and long lasting
it generates enough pressure. the one one your truck if you have extended warranty should be covered.

mongoose,

You may have a shot at getting it fixed under the emissions part of the factory warranty. Don't have my booklets handy, I will check later if I have time.
