Better Fuel Filter?

I've been trying to keep up with all that has been posted about moving your lift pump back next to the fuel tank. One thing that has not had a lot of discussion is, "What about freezing weather?

If I were to mount the Mallory lift pump I just ordered back by the fuel tank, would it increase the chances of the fuel to gel or freeze-up?

Bob,
I've wondered the same thing. I was thinking that surley some makes an in-line heater that we could tie into the filters preheater with a relay. Put it back at the tank, and away you go... ... I'll have to do some research on this.

And in case it isn't, Racor makes different filters with fuel heaters built-in. That's the way I'd go, if I were going to drive my truck in the winter. I got my brochure from UAP/NAPA (Racor brochure No. 7529), but I haven't checked prices yet.

Yes, Racor also makes an electric 300-watt in-line heater, part number 14278. Draws 21. 4 Amps. Their 500-watter is p/n 14257, and draws 35. 7 Amps.

Racor's USA phone number is 1-800-272-7537.

I had no problems with mine, installed in late January and we had a fairly cold winter, many nights in the single digits. I'm sure not as cold as some of you guy's see, but I agree with Chris. I think you'll probably be fine with the winterized diesel, add some type of enhancer (your choice) for good measure. I ran with and am still using Stanadyne PF at every fill up. Worked for me.

The Racor filters all have a flow rate on them, any where from 15 GPH to 120GPH. The 120GPH are very large, somewhere around 12" in height. That is too tall. They also have a 90GPH that is around 10" which might work. I will have to measure.

The thing I am concerned about is that the Mallory will pump 140GPH with a filter that only allows 90GPH through it have a negative effect on the Mallory?

In my opinion, no. While the Mallory has the ability to flow 140 GPH, you will never be close to that and I think a filter rated at 90 GPH should be more than adequate. Chris S. , I would be real interested in your opinion on this topic.

Bob--as I posted in the other thread of yours--the 90gph filter I'm using is doing great-I don't think there will be a problem using one of these--in all honesty we wanted to run it for a while to test it out, but since it's come up I felt it would be nice to let ya know---like said before it has a heater and WIF sensor--I've yet to get the wiring for the wif(on order) but the heater wire I just spliced into the OEM wire---chris
