Sorry to make this my first post but bought a 98. 5 24V CTD,5 soeed with 137k and it hasnt been right since the first tank of fuel. For two tanks it would run fine with intermitant sputtering and loss of power. Now its basically that way all the time. Fire it up and its fine for about 3 gears then its powerless. Im guessing this is limp mode by the way its instantanious. Ran codes and got p0462,p0463 which are fuel level sensors low and high. Then got the dreaded p0216 which is bad. Im fairly new at all this but I have been reading like a mad man to narrow my search down a bit. Went and got the "$70" lift pump just cause it was in stock at the time but Ive read about the pin in the injection pump being bad also. Im also not sure if my truck already has the in tank conversion or not so the LP I bought may have been futile but for 70 bucks who says no right.

Any thoughts would be great!

Ill be putting a fuel pressure gauge on this afternoon and get back with the results.

Welcome to TDR

Finding your lift pump is easy. drivers side of engine down and behind the fuel filter. It sits on a bracket and has three nuts holding it. Pop the hood turn on the key and just bump the starter but let go of the key ,the pump will run for 20 seconds get out and listen and look. You will find out where it is. Also fuel filter could be clogged. Owners manual sais change every 15,000 miles, but I have not gotten over 7,000 out of one in a long time. I watch the fuel pressure, and when a filter gets dirty, pressure will fall off. Sounds like you already figured out 216, You will get the bugs out and members here will help you.

Changing the fuel filter was the first thing I did when I got it home. Thanks for the fast reply. The LP is still on the block. Does this mean the $70 LP is of no help to me P#4090046?

You should be able to put your $70 LP on as a replacement to your stock LP. Recommend you get gauges to monitor your FP. But your real problem seems to be that the VP44 is gone.

There are no knew vp44 injection pumps just rebuilt. They sell for about a grand. I would not put on your new lift pump until I determined the existing one is shot. Since you already got the dreaded 216 code the knew pump is not going to fix it.

Low pressure - need to put the new one on.

For VP part numbers, depends on the year and engine. Look at Industrial Injection's website. They have them all listed.

Turns out my truck already had the pump put in the tank. I went ahead and put the new pump on and piggy backed the wires which now runs both pumps. What do I need to get rid of the pump in the tank? This also made no difference in the performance so I guess a VP44 is next. Wheres the cheapest?
