My stock 04 with almost 90K on the clock is in the shop now..... first they said it was a cam sensor, now the lift pump, both are star parts... ... Its now been sitting for 3 days..... and I don't believe they have it right.....

Problem is that the truck runs fine 80% of the time, but sometimes at idle it misses and as you pull off from a start there is a dead spot in the throttle... . than it picks up and runs fine... . On a cold start it runs fine for a minute and hunts for the correct speed..... Runs good at WOT with a load... . Pulls good up a hill... . Can't belive it's LP failure.....

On all my Fords when the Cam senor dies the truck stops... and your statement above is easier to understand when you think about LP failure... The dealer doesn't seem to have an answer... .

1 - have any of you had DC pick up the cost of the LP out of Warranty???

2 - any of you had the problem I mention???

3 - any problems with cam sensors that were erratic... .

Thanks

Is it possible the Canadians are running a mix of #1 and #2? That would explain the lubrication problem.

Dave,

I think a lift pump runs around $150 new from the dealer. I agree with you that there haven't been many CP-3 failures... fewer than lift pump failures. I remember reading about maybe 2 CP-3 failures since the beginning of the 3rd gen trucks.

LP failures and fears of bad fuel are why I'm doing this.

Ryan,

Yes, most of the stations use "winter blend" this time of year in Canada which is a mix of #1 & #2. I didn't really think of a lubricity issue with the winter blend, but now that I think about it, there has been an unusually high number of failures in the northern regions compared to the warmer climes. Maybe I need to do some more additive research.

For $150. 00, I'll pick up a spare for my next Baja trip.

I have been following your "fuel polishing" thread. Very interesting stuff and I think you're on the right track. I'm waiting for some driven and industrious soul, such as yourself, to figure it all out for me! :D

I'm workin' on it!

If you're getting any fuel cut with #1 I'd run a lubricity enhancer of some sort. Nothing fancy, just lubricant.

Jim,

I know I've heard your problem before, but I can't remember where/when. You might have a bad/intermittent fuel pressure sensor. I'd let the dealer go ahead and toss parts at it until they stumble on a fix... at least you're using the warranty! There haven't been a whole lot of cam sensor failures on these trucks (not like on the Fords!).

Something very interesting that lmills reported in another thread was "wild" fuel pressure readings after the fuel heated up. Probably a cavitation problem. It's possible that a weak lift pump might exacerbate the problem. Do you notice the miss/hesitation more when the engine's good and hot and you've been driving for awhile? Notice it more when there's less fuel in the tank?

The problem is, my 04 has 90K on the clock and these parts are out of warranty so says the dealer... . I'm with you... if they were spending their money, they can do all they want... . but its out of my pocket... .

I taught a HD clutch class last night for a Cummins faculity... . we had a nice chat after the class and their guy is going to give the dealer a hand... . TBH had I know when I took the truck in... . I assumed (***-u-me) it was a covered event with the 100K engine warranty..... but DC is telling the dealer that these parts are part of the 7/70, I'd taken it the Cummins guys..... much easier and to be honest nicer to deal with... . Their guy was able to tell me the service writer and tech that I had based on my story..... I was surprised that he could do that... he said..... no by the way you've been treated I know which service writer and tech... ... so I guess this dealer and service writer doesn't have a great rep.

Jim,

Although I'm from "the great white north", I can tell you that the lift pump, CP-3, cam sensor and all the other parts we are talking about here are DEFINITELY covered under the engine warranty NOT the basic warranty. Up here its 150,000 kms which is equal to 93,000 mi; you guys get a better deal if you get the Engine warranty for 100,000 mi.

Check the warranty language carefully, DO NOT go by what the dealership is saying or what they claim DC is telling them.

Good luck,

Dave

I am 100% with Dave. There is no way any fuel system component attached to the engine is NOT part of the 100K warranty. Your dealer, as usual, is completely full of you-know-what.

Have you thought about replacing the lift pump with a AirDog. This system provide additional fuel filtering and may eliminate the unreliable lift pump problem. Ekstam claims that the original fuel preporator has a proven service life of about 300,000 miles. I just installed an AirDog in my 2003 truck which is connected to the stock fuel filter connection where the lift pump was installed. I installed the AirDog mainly to ensure that clean fuel was provided to my engine to prevent future injector problems but after about 15 minutes using the AirDog the truck actually runs and accelerates smoother. Sorry but I have not used the AirDog long enough to give a personal report on the reliability of the system yet.

Got pickup back today. Took dealer 2 or 3 days to get pump from Star. Was done yesterday. Apparently CP-3 still working. Time will tell. Just glad I still had my fuel guzzeling 99 to take it's place temporarily.

mine just went out while driving today -

I have the same codes P0628 & 483

Calling the dealer on Monday

Has anyone replaced their LP themselves. 04 truck got close to 100,000 on it

Second lift pump just went out the other week ( 210000 miles). I put a lift pump, from an older Dodge diesel, in line down on the frame, to take it's place. Had to do some back yard engineering to get it to work though, as it would not push the diesel through the dead factory pump. I am not happy with the noise the pump makes though. Need to get some longer metric bolts and mount it with some shock absorber rubbers, and hope it works to quiet it. So far it is working well . Still need to get a fuel pressure guage:rolleyes:

They didn't replace your 1st lift pump with the in-tank conversion? My first pump lasted ~90,000 and so far the in-tank has lasted ~240,000.

Naw, it happened when the pickup was still in it's infant stage, having only 75000 miles on it and in early 2004. Musta been just before the intank pump replacement push was on.

Stock lift pump on 03's and some 04's on the back of the fuel filter housing after that they went in the tank.

This TSB is for the 2006 that is exactly what you are describing. Check out the TSB's for your year too!

Went thru 3 in-tank lp on my 04. 5. Had one replaced on the road in Jackson TN. Had one replaced in Odem TX, then replaced the last one with a FASS.
