Lost OD Again

Help with new BD exhaust brake

Yes I used the search feature but did not get the exact answers I wanted.



First of all does anyone know the p/n# for a 03 lift pump?



2nd, where exactly is the lift pump located? What tools are needed to change it and how long does it take?



Driving down to florida over the weekend and dont wanna get stranded :)

Hey, Dave, you live close to me (have I said that before?).



Anyway, the lift pump part number is 5093135AA.



The pump is located on the backside (firewall side) of the fuel filter canister. It's a small black cylindrical unit with a fuel line running up to the bottom of it. There's a quick disconnect fitting on the fuel line down along the frame rail under the driver seat. There are 4 bolts that secure it to the fuel canister. You'll want to disconnect the fuel supply line at the quick disconnect before removing the pump. I believe the change can be done with only combination wrenches (don't know the size of the bolts, but I'd bet they're 10mm).



Here's the removal procedure from the service manual:

1. Drain the filter housing.

2. Disconnect the electrical connector.

3. Disconnect the fuel tank supply line from the fuel transfer pump extension line. Do this at disconnection point at inside of left inner frame rail. The fuel line extension is permanently attached to the transfer pump. Do not attempt to disconnect fuel line at transfer pump.

4. Remove the 4 pump mounting bolts and remove the pump from the filter housing.

5. Confirm that the o-ring is also removed.



And installation:

1. Install a new o-ring to fuel transfer pump.

2. Lubricate the o-ring and OD of transfer pump inlet connector.

3. Position fuel transfer pump onto fuel filter housing. Do not use mounting bolts to draw transfer pump to filter housing.

4. Be sure pump is positioned flat to fuel filter housing. Install mounting bolts and evenly tighten to 61 in-lb.

5. Connect fuel extension line at fuel supply line [this is the quick disconnect].

6. Connect electrical connector.

7. Prime system: cycle key to actuate transfer pump. Check for leaks.

On my 04, the lift pump failed and took out the injector pump... . CP3 ??? anyway after the dealer replaced it... . I installed a Holly Red Pump at the tank... and tied the relay into the existing fuel pump circuit... . all's been well for 30K now... .

Correction: they're allen-head bolts.

... requiring a 5 mm hex key after having just replaced the lift pump with a Holley Blue!! And they are a pain to access. After trying to reach them from the top, I ended up removing the left wheel well liner.



Also, when you undo the quick disconnect the fuel will be siphoning from the tank - at least that's what happened to me. Still trying to wash the diesel off my clothes!

Jelag & JSteiger, When you replaced the stock lift pump with the Holley pusher pumps, did you mount them back on the frame near the tank? Did you have to fabricate something to replace the old lift pump, or did you leave it on the canister? How did you connect the electrical?

The current Cummins part number is 4089602. It comes with the pump, o-ring(s) and new bolts. For future reference, the fuel line (quick-connect) attached to the lift pump is 3969705 and the o-ring part number is 3010937.
 
I removed my stock lift pump and installed an AirDog in November. It was much easier to remove the left front wheel liner to get to the pump and quick disconnect. When I removed my stock pump I found some black plastic pieces in the outlet of the pump which may have been signs of the pump failing. I have not had the AirDog long enough to know if it is more reliable than the stock pump but it is suppose to be more reliable and provide additional fuel filtering (to 3 microns). So far I am hapy with the AirDog and have not had any problems with the unit. The truck does run a little smoother with less exhaust drone and a 0. 5 mpg increase.

Elite1- I bought Scotty's Smartfuel kit. Scotty has been tinkering around with the kit a bit and asked me to document my installation along with any changes I did with lots of pictures and a write-up to help him out. Anyhow, it's installed on the frame rail right before the driver's front wheel well with a bracket that slips through a shipping tie-down hole. I removed the factory lift pump and replaced it with a custom adapter from his kit. As far as wiring goes I bought a lift pump harness from Cummins and extended it and used Weatherpack connectors to connect it to the Holley. I will have pictures posted soon on my Reader's Rig gallery. I'm just waiting for Scotty to get back from his honeymoon (today I think?) and will let him go through what I did so we're on the same page so-to-speak. Stay tuned...
 
Do any of you know what size the o-ring is? I'd rather just go out and buy an o-ring from a standard parts bin...
