I have a 2001 Qcab 2500 six speed. Lately, I have noticed if driving at or near WOT, especially if going uphill, as I get near the top and let off the throttle, the engine seems to just go flat almost like its starving for fuel. After a few seconds, it kicks back in and seems fine. Truck has 92K. Just changed fuel filter about 2 weeks ago at normal change interval. Didn't seem to make any difference. I have a fuel pressure guage on order, but it hasn't arrived yet, so I dont know what the pressure is doing. Does this sound like the lift pump is starting to go?? I am concerned as I am getting ready to leave northern NH and head to Savannah GA in about 10 days for a quick turn around trip and I want to avaoid problems if I can. Also is the lift pump covered under the warranty? Any help would be appreciated. .

I would get a spare lift pump and download TOWPRO'S instructions for installing, (throw the small version of your toolbox) in the dodge.

You know though, it might be your fuel filter, get one of those to throw in the toolbox.

if it is a lift pump problem!

don't run the truck too much until you get a P/F gage on it ,you could take out the VP44 and that will cost $900-$1500

the inj. pump (VP44) is cooled by fuel and if it runs low on F/P then it could starve the VP44

you want a min. of 5. psi at WOT

keep in mind you may have 8-15 psi at idle but it must be tested at WOT

you may find it has 0 psi at WOT

hope this helps!

Thanks for the help... My F/P gauge arrived today and I'll be installing it this weekend. Also have an appointment with the local Dodge garage to check the codes that have been set. I pulled gthem off and looked them up in my manual and I think they are saying the lift pump is headed south... . Dealer advised that it is under warranty and if they codes support my conclusion, then they will replace it. .

What specific codes did you get?

My uncles truck acted the same as you described. It had a leak in the input fitting on the lift pump. It was sucking air through the leak.

There was another post about a lp someone had purchased and the problem with their OEM one was the 3 mounting bolts that holds the lp pump top on were loose and it was drawing air.

You might want to check your lp cover bolts are tight. First time I had my lp off I Locktite blue(ed) the three cover bolts into the pump body to make sure they stayed put.

My LP failed last spring and it was doing the exact same thing. I would get on the throttle, and the engine wouldnt respond for a second or two. Turns out the LP was not completely shot, it was only pumping half-capacity. If this has happened you WILL NOT be able to tell by fuel pressure. Even at half-capacity it will still run at 16 psi. Only way to tell accurately with this type of problem is a volume-flow check.

The codes I got were as follows:

P0216. . Fuel inj pump timing failure. . High fuel supply restriction, low fuel pressure

P0500. . No veh speed sensor signal

P1488. . Aux 5 volt supply volts low

P1693. . DTC in companion module pcm/ecm.
