Are the mechanical lift pumps used on the '95s rebuildable? Mine is weeping fuel. Does anyone have a cutaway diagram?

I just replaced one for the same reason on my 95. I could not find a rebuilt, but I might try to rebuild the old one later. I did not find alot of price difference between parts stores here either. Got mine at NAPA because they had it in stock.

I did notice one thing after changing mine along with the fuel filter. I had gotten slack at changing this truck's FF because I don't tow with it anymore. I noticed the fuel hose leading to the FF was under much less stress after changing the pump and FF. With the old pump and FF the hose would really jump with each stroke of the pump. Mine had 220K on it, but I wonder if changing the FF sooner would have saved the pump. I am going to keep a close eye on that hose from now on.

I just pulled my lift pump off and tore it apart. I found that the one way valve on the outlet had some pieces broken off and had fallen down into the primer portion of the pump. Cleaned the pump and put it back together. Truck now runs way better. It looks to me that you could just replace the one way valves and o rings to make them almost as good as new.

Yes sir, there ought to be a under 10 dollar kit that makes these pumps as good as new. There are three of those valves that fall out in your hand when you unscrew what ever is holding it in. Also some o-rings and rubber boot. What could be easier? I have been surprised with all my reading of this forum that there is no mention of a rebuild kit. come on Larry B!

Mine broke the spring, was alright otherwise.

Somebody posted a tractor/backhoe part # a while back that was pretty reasonable & had the same Carter # on it.

That may have been the Case machines. They had a listing but the part had gone up a good bit to over $140 and was another overnight at best at our dealer. Advance had the best price here but was an overnight delivery too.

I have looked all over and cannot find a source for the check-valves. I think they must be only produced by the pump manufacturer(s). Anyway, if anyone can point me to a source I'd be glad to put together a kit.

One thing's nice at least, the pumps are fairly inexpensive.

Larry B, I rescued my alternator, starter, fuel shutoff solenoid, and fuel lines with your stuff (better than stock) at a huge savings over having the local mechanics have ago at my truck. Thanks. On my 94 Dodge fuel pump the little rubber valves were what wore out.

I recall a John Deer tractor made in the early 70's losing power when it was fairly new and tracked the problem to a lift pump valve that looked identical to the ones in my 94 Dodge. As a field fix, I snipped the valve cage open and took the little rubber piece out and sanded it smooth on the seating surface side and put it back in, as a temporary fix I was thinking. Over 6 thousand hours later that same pump was still doing it's job. I don't hang around machinery much these days so the chance of me finding a valve that would fit is slim but if I were to find such an animal I would be quick to let you know about it. Hope someone else does for the sake of the next guy. If my present pump lasts 240K miles like the old one did I will probably never need another one.

Cummins Service Literature (shop manual/troubleshooting manuals) list such a repair kit, but I've yet to find a Cummins distributor that can find any/ get any parts to rebuild the lift pump. The manuals seem to indicate that check valves and seals were included in the kit. The other possible wear items are the springs and the plunger that rides on the cam.

Good luck

Andy
