It had to do with carefully disassembling the pump and inspecting the tightness of the 3 thru-bolts that hold everything together - and inspecting the condition of the gasket that seals the cover to the pump body. Apparently, sometimes the gasket compresses or deforms to the point the pump impeller no longer seals or functions properly - frequently, assuming no other physical or electrical problems, simply turning the gasket over and carefully reassembling will return the pump to useful service. Of course, a careful inspection of the rest of the pump elements, and making sure the internal filter screen is clean is also a good idea...
