Using Geno's Vulcan Performance Transfer Pump Relocation Kit and a $58. 41 Cummins transfer pump, I have relocated the new pump to the frame next to the tank. I had no problems with the install, and engine seemed to work well.

Now after less then 100 miles of light towing with a 3k boat, I have a ‘Check Engine’ light. The scanner shows the P0216 code and the statement ‘Injection Pump Timing Failure. ’

The engine starts well, runs well, and has good power. Upon reset of the scanner, the ‘check engine’ light is now off.

Can anyone give me some advice on how to find out what is going on?

TIA

Follow-up: The old pump was not dead to my knowledge, but it did have 148k on it and I was getting edgy about it. I do not have a fuel pressure gauge, but with the pump running and the water drain open on the fuel filter canister, I get a strong and solid flow of fuel.

I did replace the fuel filter at the same time as I did the underhood work on the fuel pump relocation.

You may have had some air and got a lean condition.

I don't know what code it would set.

Others might? Different than what he had?

When you open the lines like that , at times you have to prime it at the input of the VP44 to get the air out.

Get a FP gauge... ... some of the pumps don't do bad at all when there's nothing to work against. One guy on here had a bad campaign LP.

And DC has installed bad LPs from off the shelf.

If you are in the area . I would recomend TST performance just south of indy IN , they recently put on a industrail injection vp 44 for 1250 out the door and that inclueded labor. Took them about 1. 5 hours to do the install. I put about 4k under heavy tow and no leaks or other problems. They said my old VP looked original... It had 216 k on it

Oh yea you really need a fuel presure gaudge. It will let you know way ahead of time when the pump starts to go out. Last pump I roached still made a big shoot out the water valve on the fuel canister. When the pumps are on the way out they get tjumping around from 13 to 5 and all over the place. This last pump that went out lasted about one month,Got the new one near the tank via Genos relocate kit. The kit works good , takes a lot of hassle out but I doubt they have 10 bux in it
