Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Lift pump replacement

When I recently took my 02 truck into my regular mech to have the fuel filter changed, I also had him check my fuel pressure. (Truck seems like it use to have more power) He said that the lift pump needs to be replaced. (Im still under the 5 yr, 100k, so I think its still under warrantee ?)

Anyway, he said that if Dodge replaces the pump, it will be in that fuel tank, and that is not as good. He would replace the pump in the original position (I think thats where it would be, but not in the tank)

Can anyone tell me if there is an advantage to his suggestion (it would cost me about $300 if he does it, free (?) if under warrantee)

Thats the direction I think Im headed, mostly because of the cost. But, the 5 years is over for me in Sept. So, I dont know if I should take the rest of the warrantee into account or not. If the lift pump has gone south, can that have ramifications with the injector pump as well ?

Have the dealer put the intank pump in, and then put an OE pump back into the stock location after the dealer is done.



Did it affect your VP? Don't know - you never said what the old pump was doing. Was it 0psi always? Low pressure?

The mech didnt think the VP had problems, from what he could tell.

It tested at 15psi with no load. But, when driving under a light acceleration, the fuel pressure dropped to 2 psi. He said it should nho go below 4 psi under FULL load

15 psi to 2 psi? Sure he didn't check it before changing the fuel filter? Doesn't sound right. Your VP should be doing OK though.



Changing a LP takes about 30 minutes for someone who has done one before. A new LP at list is $160, and $70 if you can get in on the bus program. At $300 to put in a full price LP, your mech is making about $280/hour.

I guess I have to take his word that he checked it after he changed the fuel filter. But, Ive known this shop for a long time, and they usually are pretty honest (I think)

The pump he suggested replacing with is an FP923, if that makes any sense. HE would sell it for $250 for the part and $62 for the labor.

Like I said, get the dealer to put in the intank pump. Then give your mech $220 to put the stock LP back in ($160 for the pump and $60 for the install). You are $$$ ahead and have what promises to be a reliable system.
