My vp44 took a dump because the lift pump was bad, I just bought this truck 1 month ago, it had 51000 on it, at 54000 was when the vp44 whent out, it all was replaced under waranty but now it seems to get worse milage, from 20 mpg to 16, at 65 mph. Did any one else have this happen?

All of this diesel stuff is new to me. I have had 3 Dodge gas burners till now. Great web site...
 
FIRST, welcome to the BEST group of knowledgeable Cummins guys you could ever hope to find...



SECOND, by ALL MEANS, look into adding a "pusher pump" to your truck to extend the life of your new VP-44, or eliminate future problems completely!



Just do a search on "pusher pumps", then sit back and read... Here's a picture of mine installed back near the fuel tank:

Several outfits offer the complete kits for around $150 - or you can piece together your own for under $100...

Somewhere I remember reading that the VP44 doesn't like tanks less than half full. Anyone recall this? Seems like the deal was no pusher pump needed if you can fill up at half way consistently.

The 1/2 tank issue was related to the fact that the VP is cooled by the excess diesel fuel from the Injection pump which is returned to the tank.

The pump raises the temp of the returned fuel, so that as the fuel level drops you have less mass in the tank to cool the fuel before it is sent back through the pump again.

Positive fuel pressure is necessary to provide the injection pump with it's cooling source.
