Hello to All, I'm a newbie from Seattle area... ...

I just bought a creampuff used 83K mile, STOCK 2003 QC Longbed 305H. O. /6spd 2WD trailer puller. One older previous owner whom Ive spoken with had truck maintained to DODGE requirements.

Warranty work lookup with DODGE doesnt show any fuel pump replacement, so may I assume that I still have engine mounted pump ?

With 83K miles is it just a matter of time..... ???

Which FASS or AirDog system do I want with water and fuel filters ???? and does the FASS system still pump through factory pump, or is OEM unit with then bypassed.

Please go slow and explain with detail, as I'm not a diesel tech

Would GENO's be my only choice for purchase $$$$$$$

With much appreciation,

Thanks

THis is about the time they go out. You want to change out now because you can draw through the "straw" that is in the fuel tank. Factory pump will have to be eliminated because you can't draw through it. Go with the fuel filters 2 micron as with the high pressure these small micron particles can tear up injectors ect. The FASS is mantenance free you can't replace the brushes. Air dog not sure about. Good luck, wouldn't mind a 70's judge with 455h. o.

They do go out but not so sure about at what mileage. I knew of two 03s that when traded in with 150k plus on them had no issues with pumps. I did have mine changed to the updated in the tank module.

I would do two things along with not doing one thing. The two options I would do is 1) go to Cummins and buy the lift pump from them ( i did for my 99 and haven't had a problem in 133k miles). 2) Go with the FASS system. The one thing I wouldn't do is have Dodge install the in-tank option. It's the most expensive (the last time I checked) option, and, least reliable (in my view). Plus, if you have a problem with the in-tank, you are either stuck with Dodge, or going to FASS at that time.

The FASS would be the direction I would go then. I would go in that direction if you have modifications on truck anyway. Airdog and others have good units as well, but, I only have knowledge about the FASS unit. I installed a DDRP on a 2000 model and ordered one for my truck because it comes with a 4 year warranty and it flows a little bit more ( thinking about RV injectors). Plus, the DDRP installed in the same spot as the unit from Cummins.

There have been very few failures of the in-tank pump. When I got my FASS a little over a year ago I believed all the speculation that the in-tank pump was junk, and that simply has not been the case. At the time, my dealer's service dept (whom I have a good relationship with) was changing two filter mount lift pumps a week, while only replacing TWO OVERALL in-tank pumps.

Had I known then how reliable the in-tank pump is I would have saved the $$ that I spent on the FASS and done the in-tank fix under warranty.

Almost forgot, within a week of getting my FASS installed I had to go back to the shop and get a new unit put on, as even though the newer quieter pumps were out for over 6 months I received an old unit that was so loud it was hard to carry on a conversation in the cab with my wife or daughter.

I had the intank put in mine for the same reasons. I read a short article way back when written by Glacier Diesel Power about the Dodge in tank setup wasn't to bad in design and set up. Once I read that with no plans to do any more mods to my truck I went with the factory unit on Chryslers dime.
