Hey I was wondering if anyone can tell me how u can tell if the lift pump is weak or going out. My truck is running great and i have no problems but i dont wanna hurt anything if it decides to die on me. the truck only has 60,000 miles on it. thanks guys.

the fuel system is basically bulletproof on that year of a truck. i know guys with 300,000 miles on 96 and 97 and never changed the lift pump or injection and they are still running strong.

You have been reading too many 24 valve posts about their terrible lift pump. Even if the 12 valve lift pump quits (very rare) it won't break anything else like the 24 valve lift pumps do. 60K miles and you're worried? Nothing on your engine is broke in yet. I have 234K miles on mine. No lift pump problems.

I have heard that there is an audible ticking sound when the pump starts failing. I have also heard that 200k was the thresh-hold. I've been carrying a spare pump around for nearly 100k now, and still no problems. I think you are safe.

The ticking noise I had, wasn't the lift pump itself, making the noise. It was one of the springs inside the pump. It was weak, and not returning to full length. The amount of the pump stroke, was the amount it was short. Found out after replacing the pump.
