If the lift pump doesn't work anymore will the engine still run? I'm being told that the lift pump is just for primming the system so I don't need to monitor fuel pressure. If you do have to monitor the system, how and where do you tie in the fuel pressure gage ?

The lift pump runs all the time, and yes if the pump quits you stop running. There is an enormous amout of info about this subject, do a search for a lot of info.

When the lift pump quit on my 04, it killed the engine, while I was driving down the road. . So maybe it is more than a primer on the 3rd gens. Just my guess. I believe that if I would have had a guage I may have seen the pump starting to fail earlier, and not have been sitting along side the road. But, from what I see on this website, I am afraid that the guages are no more reliable than the lift pumps that they are supposed to monitor. Flame suit on, now! Sorry for nothing but opinions, hopefully you will recieve some helpfull replies.

A friendWorks at DCX He told me that in his testing on Lift pumps that he was 100% failure rate to stall when lift pump quits. He had Lift Pump hooked to switch to turn off and on, Switch off and truck died very quickly after. They are not like the 2nd gens... . Just get an 05 In-tank style lift pump and be happy... . readbetweenthelinesretrofitkitiscomingfor oldertrucksto05style

Originally that was the case however there are 2 problems. 1) If you add a box you could outrun that pump which will starve the injection pump. 2) If the lift were starting to fail it will cause a restriction to the injection pump. For those reasons its good to monitor IMO.

If i remember correctly there is a safety switch thats triggers electronically to kill the engine if the lift pump goes out to keep it from taking the injection pump out too.

BTW that 05 retrofit kit is a great idea. I thought about that the second I heard the 05's have an intank pump. The only reason I never pursued it is because I am patiently waiting on a RASP. Come on Olee, move it :-laf

I have a 04 , and I guess that it has the lift pump also. my question is, can you remove the lift pump and replace it with a 05 style, in tank full pump? It would not be to hard except for the wireing you much run. this would stop a lot of dead pumps.

I hope the in-tank pump is (at long last) the answer. But we'd do well to remember that everyone thought the 2003 lift pump design was "the answer" too.

I have a question for you 3rd gen guys, if your LP dies and you starve the injection pump of fuel, will it cause internal damage to the injection pump (like on a 2nd gen)?

the fass pump without the filters seemed to be the answer, but i think that i have read that they are high maintaince and you have to clean the brushes because they quit running. is this true?

Usually, yes. The CP-3 is fuel-lubricated just like the VP-44.

From what I hear, it is somewhere between $100. and $150. But all in all, not a bad investment. IMO
