My 01. 5 started missing slightly . Then in and out of OD w/lock and unlock of the converter. Down on power. I suspect the lift pump. Trouble codes set were PCM 1698,we all know this one,ECM 0230,and 1690 The truck has had an intermittent stumble for sometime. Lift Pump?

  GET A FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE INSTALLED IMMEDIATELY, IF NOT SOONER! Anyone that has a 24 valve CTD is playing Russian Roulette without one. If your LP is failing, you can usually see a drop in FP before it fails. Not always, but usually. If you can change out the LP beofre it fails completely, you have a better chance of avoiding VP-44 damage.

All may be well

I checked under the hood today before having the truck towed to the dealer. I noticed the drivers side negative battery cable was disconnected. As this is the lead with the ground for the ECU my MIL light turned off and the truck runs fine. I cleared the stored PCU 1693 code by disconnecting the battery. The ECU 1690 and 0230 codes are stiil appearing with the key check method. Hopefully with a few more start cycles these will clear. I will definitely be installing a fuel pressure gauge. I guess I should hold on to the new lift pump I ordered because you never know .

Fuel pressures

I just replaced my fuel filter as part of routine service. Attempting to bleed with the lift pump, I noticed it was not coming on. I use a fuel pressure gauge setup with a tee with a drain valve on it (common service tool) connected to a clear hose. It makes the air bleed procedure less messy, and I can check the LP pressure at the same time.

In the past week, I experienced a stumble at launch a few times. With engine running, not only was there no pressure at the test port, but a slight vacuum. Power and grounds check solid, I'm ordering a new lift pump today.

New lift pump

Installed the new lift pump last night. Carter pump came in a Cummins box with a Mopar label. Part number 05015723AC, might be an improved iteration of that part.

Fuel pressure at the filter inlet and VP 44 inlet are both a solid 16 psi now. Stumble is gone and it may be a little quieter. I never did have codes, but it's cool weather here and I drove it very lightly until I could get the LP changed.

The failed lift pump had no continuity across the pins (open circuit). Comparing to the new one, I measured 1. 8-2. 0 ohms.

Hope this helps someone else. I learned a lot from reading on this topic in this forum. Thanks!
