Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) NEED SPECIAL TOOL, help

I am planning on getting a fuel pressure gauge soon but I have had two CTD with no LP problems. First was a 99, traded at 130,000, and my current truck an 02 with 70,000. Both trucks pulled the same 7000 lb trailer every mile. Both trucks have no engine mods and the 99 has 230,000 on it now with no problems. Do I need to worry about the low pressure problem? I did notice something a little strange with the 02 truck. I just got the truck home and was hanging all the toys on it when I started it up to turn the wheels and I revved it up a little it smoked and missed but idled fine. ? Several times after that within the next 40,000 miles or so it would do it when I left in the mornings on a cold engine but has not done it since. Now the exhaust question: I was thinking of putting the 5 inch exhaust on without a muffler or ressinator. I am running the factory pipe with the ressinator but no muffler now and like the sound. Is it going to be way to loud or should I put the muffler on it? I can't see putting a muffler on a CTD but don't want it to get annoying. I know it won't make anymore power but man does it sound good! Thanks, I will be checking daily for responses.

02 CTD 70k 5 speed, reg cab, 4x4,2500, major tunes, (Ask me how I did that!), LED under truck lighting ( you oughta see this! WAY better than neon), bone stock engine ( made my livin with both trucks, needed reliability and high milage out of them so I left them alone) and tons of other custom stuff that I made

5" straight pipe is LOUD... sounds awesome, but my truck had a resonance at 2500rpm that was ear splitting... which is odd to me because everyone else seems to have resoance problems at lower RPM like 2000... I say try it, and if you don't like it, add a resonator.

I LOVED my straight pipe, but it was just too loud on long trips... I put a small dynomax resonator on the downpipe (4" inside diameter, 5" outside diameter, 12" long) I would like for it to be a little louder, but it sounds good and the resonance is pretty much a non-issue now.

you could put one right up near the downpipe and start the 5" pipe right after it.

Love the 5". Had to put a resonator(straight-thru) on it because of the drone at 21-2200 RPMs. Gave me a really nasty headache without it.

hope this helps

5" inlet/outlet. Approx. 9" dia. X 16" long.

Do I need to put the resonator on the down pipe or could I put it where the muffler would normally go? What would it sound like with the muffler that they sell with the exhaust system? Thanks guys

I would put it where the muffler would normally go. I have a 99 with 5" no muffler and its VERY LOUD. I love watching little kids cover there ears, old people stare, and most people roll up their windows as I pass by. Well worth the price to get that "SEMI" sound. I do have a sound/vibration about 2000-2500 and from 2800+ it kinda "sings"... . don't really know how else to describe it.

I would put the resonator up close... right after the downpipe. this will pull the sound out of the exhaust early and make it less able to bounce around in the pipe and resonate.

it sounds good w/ the muffler that comes with the system, but it's too quiet for me, so I ditched that and went with the dynomax bullet. I'm happy. I'd like to be able to flip a switch between straight piped and darn near silent, but untill I can, I'll live with this.

i love the sound of my 5" straight pipe! i do get a little drone at 1600-1700 rpm, but not near enuogh to ever put a muffler on it. try it straight piped, you can always add a muffler later.

I have tried a 4" dynomax system which replaced the exhaust from the factory down pipe back. No drone and sounded like a dump truck. I ditched the mufller and ran factor down pipe and 4" straight pipe. Much louder with a raspy crackly tone when you got on it. Very nice echoing off the building in the city! I then went to 4" down pipe, 5" straight pipe and the sound got deeper and I lost the raspy crackly tone. Both the 4" and 5" resonated at 2000 rpm. I have since added a nelson resonator which reduced the resonance frequencies above 150Hz and knocked the 125Hz resonance by 1 db, however I still have the nasty 125Hz resonance. I added the resonator where the muffler was, perhaps I should have installed closer to the front of the truck.

Mine is directly behind the X-fer case. Won't fit on down pipe.
