HELP!

I have a 97 2500 4x4 with 125,000 miles and a problem with my lights.

When I drive my lights will flicker. Get dim and brighten back up. They don't go out just flicker. This is after the engine warms up and the heater grid is not coming on. At times it isn't much. At other times, you can see the Alt. needle dip and recover. I've had the Alt rebuilt, replaced the heater grid and checked every wire that crosses by another wire, frame, and piece of metal, nothing! This affects all lights. Interior, headlights, driving ect. I'm at wits end(and don't many of those). I've read in the forum that the headlight switch is a problem and that it will smoke and at times bursts into flames but never making all lights flicker. Any and all help will be applied to the problem.

Thanks.

No they are not. I thought of that but was told that they could not be the problem. I guess I should have read the posts a little better. (Duh) It looks like "firemanshawn" has the same problem and has a lot of good suggestions that I am going to try.

Thanks.

Sure sounds like the heaters are firing. How about disconnecting the heater grid- after the engine is warm. Don't have to tell you to insolate the terminals REALLY well! Will at least eliminate one source of a MAJOR amperage draw!

This happened on my 96 several times over a year of so. A couple things you could try that will help isolate if it is related to your grid heaters is when it is occurring, remove one of the two heavy cables that a directly ontop of the engine right in front of the air horn. They supply power to the grid heaters. I say remove on at a time and drive it. If it does not make it stop, remove the other one.

If this makes the flickering stop, one of the grid heater soloniods (relays) on the drivers fender have failed. They are replace as a set. The other they this could be related to is the relay on the firewall the powers the soloinoids. Both are pretty easy fixes cheap fixes. If you live in an area that never sees temps below zero, you could get by on one heater.

Thanks guys, hopefully this will help. This problem has been driving me crazy. The grid is fairly new and of course everyone knows that all new parts always work. ;)
