Has anyone had thier limited slip stop limiting the slip? I raced a buddy's power stroke the other day from a stand still and notices only one black patch of rubber. The truck only has 22,000 miles on it now and the rear is now acting like an open rear end.

There has been speculation that too much friction modifier might have been added by DC to ensure the rears didn't chatter. I changed mine last month and put in synthetic. I had to do it twice cause the rear cover didn't seal. First time I added modifier. The second time I left it out cause I had to go back to DC to get some to do it the next day. I haven't added any yet cause the LSD is working great without it and there is not chatter/shudder on turns. I know it's working cause I "chained" to a pine tree a couple of weeks ago and pulled it down. Both wheels were pulling all the time.

I don't think that is the problem. I know it used to work. I haven't changed anything including the oil and now I can't even get it to spin both tires in a gravel driveway.

I am going to jack it up this weekend and check the shop manuals proceedure (jack up on wheel leave the transmission in gear and us a torque wrench to check the torque required to sping the raised wheel). According to the manual the torque should be anywhee between 30 and 200 lb ft. I have a feeling it will be easy to spin that raised wheel.

After running the truck on BD's dyno a couple years ago it acted real funny after pulling it off. It creecked and groned when trying to turn it. Later that day it was back to normal. I noticed while on the dyno only on wheel had created a small pile of rubber. It kept losing traction at about 210 horse power. This dyno (if I remember correctly) had independent rollers. This means the clutches had to be slipping while at a very high rate of speed. I am now wondering if that caused major wear and 15,000 miles later they are shot.

Has anyone replaced the clutch pack on these rearends? If so are any special tools required? Where did you get the new clutches and how much were they?

I am in the same boat. I think something is messed up. Sometime i can get both wheels to spin, but 99% of the time. . it doenst work, or at least like i think it should. any info would help

Mine has issues also. I was talking with one of the Dodge boys the other day and he said you couldn't put in too much modifier. Personally, I think he's out to lunch. He asked me why I just didn't bring it in. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I simply didn't want them touching my truck again. There have been an incredible number of posts with people complaining about their LSDs. I used to have a much higher opinion of Dana. I don't know what the answer is but there is definitely an issue here...

There was a nice post on this subject back in Jan.

The basic outcome was that the LSD is rated for 200 lbft, and we all know that the the only time we make that is when the starter is engaged #ad
So when you get on it 1 tire spins. If you idle(or just over) it will hold.

The LSD has clutch packs and springs which will wear and become useless after abuse behaind the Cummins.

I am having problems with the shuttering when I have a load and turn left. I put Amsoil in and it still shudders. Then I added the additive, still shudders, then I added another tube of additive and i still get a slight shudder. I just hate to take my truck in but it looks like i have too, warranty is running out fast.

All Right... can I get an explanation on the differences between limited slip and posi-trak...

I get stuck a lot in my big red pig..... I will have one wheel on dry ground, BUT the other willl be spinning it's life out... . I KNOW what they say about limited slip being as good as posi-trak, but that comes from the dealers, not much comfort when you are stuck with one wheel on dry ground.....

I have only 45000 miles on this truck, but it has acted this way all along... I first got stuck around 5000 miles on the new odo.
This is why I now have a front mounted receiver hitch... since I don't see any real good thing to hook to to pull out, and I was always needing pulled out...

Thanks for any help...

Sky, When I changed the lube on my 98 and used the modifier I purchased at NAPA, I had shudder on turns. I put in some of the Mopar stuff and it stopped. Don't know what the difference is but the Mopar did the trick on that one. I don't have any in my 01, just synthetic and it seems to work fine with no shudder.

I think most of the people that are having problems with the LSD are manual transmission trucks. Manuals have the Dana 80 with the Trac-loc LSD. Autos have the Dana 70 with the Power-loc LSD. The Power-loc is a much stronger LSD. I have had both. The Trac-loc barely worked ( if at all) while the Power-loc works great. Hope this helps.

Ok guys here is the fix. I have this problem too. I found a shop that will take out the lsd and put in a locker. They are a 4wd drive shop. It will be a true locking differential and no clutches. Can't wait till I get the money.

I would be interested in this, after i do some other bombing, i know it will really be an issue. The big injectors and the dd box, well lets just say one tire will go up i smoke now... . so i can only guess how bad it will get.

dana set up the cluthes to be less agresive. You can restack the cluthes and it will hook up 100 times beter and it costs nothing. We do it here at work alot.

Okay... have to ask. How hard is it to restack the clutches?

What kind of a locker are you talking about? Brand names please. . I use ARB on my Toyota Land Cruiser, but dont think it would hold up with all that torque behind a Cummins. I would think Detroit locker would be about the strongest thing you could get
besides a spool.
