2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Limited Slip question

Some time ago there was a discussion about the clutch plate order in our Dana axles.



There are several plate sets inside the clutch pack that are not used and the discussion was about the sequence and changing the order for better locking.



We changed one set in my axle around and the gripping force has greatly improved. This may be the solution, I wish we would have reversed two sets now



Does anyone have the thread saved? I would like to read more.

No, remove the cover & fluid, remove the 4 bolts holding the carrier in, remove the carrier, NOTE THE SHIMS THAT COME OUT!!!!! put them back in the same order, remove the 10 or so bolts holding the carrier together, remove the clutch packs, NOTE the order they come out, lay the cluch packs like a hand of cards on the table. You will notice the order, plate, clutch, plate, clutch, plate, clutch etc. Towards the end you will have clutch, clutch, (3)clutch, plate, plate,plate, plate, plate (5). set them so that one (or more) set(s) is clutch-plate-clutch-plate, this will increase the effectiveness of the LSD. One of them is splined to the inner shaft and the other is splined to the carrier housing. If you put the shims back correctly you wont mess up the adjustments. I'm not sure if a side bearing has to come off too, cant remember for sure

As long as you don't remove the carrier bearings the shims will not come off so you won’t need to worry about that. They are between the bearings and the carrier. Make sure you remove the axles before you try to remove the carrier. The hardest part of the whole job is removing and reinstalling the carrier... it's a tight fit.

There ya go - all the skinny on clutch packs - I wouldn't mind doing it to my own - better to have a LOT of clutches doing a LITTLE work, than a FEW doing lotsa work...
