Just had the limited slip replaced in my truck, finished it today. (that's another story) Does anyone know how this limited slip unit works. The tech that did the work said it was non-repairable in their shop. It comes out as one piece, (about 75 lbs) I know it doesn't use clutches, the tech didn't know how it worked either. Is it a variation of the spring and cog type, anyone know?

had mine replaced at 11,000 mi. / and 4 months old. took about 4 hrs. and I was able to be there for the whole job. Mechanic was a very sharp fellow who discussed the AA third member and explained that it looks and works like the old torsen diff of DANA fame. It's 2 halves are held together by 2 countersunk allen machine screws and the 14 ring gear bolts. We took it apart ( it was gonna be sent back defective anyway ), found 4 spiral gears set around the center axle coupler. Mech says the LS works off the machined clearance set-up in the 2 halves.

Adding Limited Slip

I'm planning to add a limited slip to mine or a locker. If it's a locker, I'd like one I can turn off. If anyone can recommend one, please post it here.

Thanks for the info. I could see the spiraled gears but really couldn't figure out how they would work.

There's a good drawing and explanation of how the LS in the 11. 5 works in the service manual, for those that have it.

I talked to one of the guys in my dealer's service department, he said you could get a limited slip from Auburn for an 03 RAM for ~$600. I don't know much about them. He also said a factory unit would run about ~$2000 installed.

Anyone have information on the Auburn unit?
