Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 6 speed difficult shift

Was starting out easy from a light today and thought I felt a studder, 1/4 mile later, dead peddle. Replaced apps couple of years ago, that dead peddle was nothing above idle. This time I can get to 1300 rpm, 49mph "limp mode?"

Got it home and pulled a 1689, no communication between inj pump moduel and ecm. And 1693, DTC detected in companion JTEC moduel.

For the heck of it I started it back up, and it ran just fine. ???

Am I on the way to a new ecm? Im afraid to use my daily driver now?

One final note, A couple weeks ago the ecm was sending anywhere from 0-12 volts to the lift pump, making fuel pressure all over the board. I solved that with a key on circuit through a relay to the lift pump, (thanks to Jlandry)

Thanks in advance for any ideas, Bill.

I had a similar problem with my Ram diesel engine, when cold it was difficult to turn above 1400 RPMs, was very very weak. Once it warmed up, normal power would kick in as I passed 1600 RPMs. Luckily I still had an extended warranty so I took it in, turned out I had a bad lift pump, caused by some ******* that put trash in my fuel tank. Fuel pump was covered but I had to pay $400 to have my tank flushed and replaced the fuel filter. Funny how power would instantly come back at 1600 RPMs.

1689 is no communication with the VP44... . I had this issue intermittently for about a year. I even installed a new VP44 because I could find no other problems... . Well, still got the code. The problem was the Edge EZ..... Try to unplug your comp data port connector, clear the codes , and drive for a bit and see if it happens again... ... You will have to use a code scanner to clear the codes.

Edge did warrenty the EZ... . you may give them a call.

Sorry, code 1869 was brain fart typo

Now, along with 1689, 1693, I'm getting 0253, (Fuel inj pump valve open circuit internal to vp44) I/ve cleaned & dielectric greased all computer & pump plug-in's & grounds. Put ecm back to stock w/Smarty. Took a ride, the second I turned comp on it stumbled. Gonna ride around w/comp off for a while and see. Hate to buy a pump or ecm and not fix anything.

No Smarty, No Comp, === NO GOOD

I was just going to post on these code. My co-worker has a 02 3500 and it wont run, I pulled 1689, 1693, 0217 and 0230.

P0230 Transfer Pump (Lift Pump) Circuit
Out of Range
Problem detected in fuel transfer pump circuits.

P1689 (M) No Communication Between ECM
and Injection Pump Module
Data link circuit failure between ECM and fuel injection
pump. Low power, engine derated, or engine stops.

I am going to see if the lift pump is working and how many psi, but I was going to ask if people have come across the 1689 code... . question answered.

Although has there been someone that got the code and HAD to get a new VP-44?

Start the eliminations! If it's good for a few trips without the Smarty and Comp, program the Smarty back in. I'd bet dollars to donuts that the Comp is the problem, too. Been there as well and Edge took good care of a three year old box for no charge.

Smarty back on sw9, instead of sw8 comp is off and all is good.

Called Edge today and talked to Matt, he took my info and said, send it in.

Well it's packaged, send tomorrow.

Will let ya know.

Got the comp back today and, truck runs great! They said, replaced some bad electronics and updated to the currunt version, now all 5 lites work too. Truck seems to run stronger than ever! Sure glad I didn't buy vp44 or ecm. What I had accepted to be quite expensive turned out to be $0. 00. Hats off to EDGE. They charged me nothing, not even shipping and I bought this box in 2000
