I searched here and the Internet and didn't find a good explanation. Last month on the way to a friends cabin I had a few seconds of reduced fueling -- not really a dead pedal; just no power. The power came back and no check engine light so I ignored it. No further issues driving up and back (800km) Last week, same thing but this time a CEL and the codes P0216 (injector pump timing failure) and P0237 (MAP sensor voltage low). It happened several times on the trip up and each time I took it out of overdrive and power came back. On the trip back it was fine the entire way. My Edge Juice reports 10 - 15psi of fuel pressure and the truck starts normally and runs smooth even in limp mode. The truck has 120,000km (72K miles) and the previous owner replaced the lift pump twice.

Most threads basically say P0216 = VP44 going bad but there isn't a lot of followup and a few people replace the VP44 and continue to have problems. I read the Blue Chip Diesel VP44 diagnostic page but nothing fits exactly. I guess the next step is to test the MAP and APPS. I'm only carrying an ATV and all these failures happen at light throttle. I run my Edge at 2 of 5 (tow).

What's next? I use the truck mostly for trips into the wilderness and I'm not looking for that kind of adventure.

I had a couple causes of dead pedal and P0216 at 52K. The year before in hot SW weather I had a little longer cranking. I went with Midwest Fuel Injection for a VP-44. At 104K and running fine. I did NOT remove the rear three fuel lines. I just pushed them against the block and slid the pump out. Made my own gear puller out of a piece of angle iron. 6-8 hour job.
