Talked with a Linex dealer the other day about doing my Rocker panels with the Linex. He is trying to talk me out of it as he has had bad experiences with Dodges. Any one see the following on their Linex Rocker panel job?

The top edge of the Linex does not have a good place to stop, so the Linex has to bond real well and apparently does not. The dealer sees water get behind the Linex and after freezing it will slowly start to peel that top edge off (i. e. looks like hell).

David, who did you call, Yipes? You might want to check out the stuff I'm planning on installing on the 22nd. 3M scotchcal clear plastic - looks pretty rugged and definately did the trick on my Ranger.

The line-x makes a perfect cut line on the over rail bedliner, and seems to be totally adhered, but then again it never has water trying to get under it.

I did my rocker panels but for cosmetic reasons I did not come up to the first body line. I ran my along the bottom edge of the doors... looks real good and the Linex rep here said that he has never had a problem. I guess time will tell.
I also did the underneath of the dually fenders front and rear of the tires.
I also did a 'lip' all around the wheel wells that is 1/2" high but goes way into the fender area inside the wheel well.

We shoot the Speedliner brand. There shouldn't be any reason not to do it except one. In the installers mucks it up, it is next to near imposssible to fix. Ask if they use a prodcut called Wire Tape. It is a masking that has a small wire in it. It allows the material to dry alittle more so you get a good clean line. If you let it dry too long with reagular masking, No good. If you pull it too early, big mess.

I had an old chevy blazer that I shot the lower half with, because of body cracks and such. Looked great.

The main reason the dealer is trying to talk you out of it is because of the difficulty of it. If he hesitates to do it, find one that has and is confident.

David,
I have the Line-X on the sides, all the way up to where the two tone paint line would be.
Only time will tell how well it stands up to the weather. I am pleased so far, as all it takes to clean is just hosing it off. I've had several people ask about it, as is stands out well against the blue truck. I'll be the first to post if any problems arise.

This is a concern of mine too; how well does it adhere when you have it applied over the rail at the top.

I've had one flat bed done at work, and there are places at the edge where it did not stick tight- you can get under the edge and pull it up.
I think it likely that was because the installer did not prep correctly??

Mike, mine is over the rail and it is bonded with the truck, there is no way it is ever coming off. I was one that thought that over rail sucked because of my experience with drop-in's but it really looks great and is much more functional. It is all in the prep, they must rough the surface before they spray. If it is a good shop, they will have no problem with you watching the job get done so you know it is done right.

David if you remember my Rhino liner goes over the rails looks great and no problems. This should be the same process don't you think. When you come out take a look. Tell our buddy HVAC to set us up another BOMB fest, look forward to seeing you we had a great time last time you were out. PS bring your video gear.

Dave, I had over the rail also, and two different dealers did it (both Ultimate). The orig one couldnt do the tailgate over so another did that. No problems with the bed, will never know about how the tailgate makes out (stolen 24 or 25 Mar). Asked about the rockers, they both said they could do and the one had done it. They pointed out the main problem was where to stop on the door sill, if they rolled it inside, more taping. If they left it at the bend, it could get worn off or ??? from stepping in and out. Opening doors to "shoot" this area could cause "overspray" inside the truck.

How have others delt with this??? and what do you think is better - over the sill or just to the bend???

Thx for all the input folks.
With the stock market and taxes, I guess I'll take a little breather from the spending spree. maybe #ad

But then again I hope to see HVAC etc. this coming week! (in CA now)

Nothing like a good run in HVAC's rig to shake the stock market jitters out of ya!

I was considering having the rockers sprayed with rhino or Line-x, but both of them wanted big money,$570 at rhino and $75/hr (8hrs work)at line-x. What did all you pay to have it done, if you don't mind me asking??
I also looked at the application of either on my sport and I don't know where I would stop. No moulding or anything to give it a clean line...

After what I saw today at the Line-X dealer I took my truck to, I wouldn't get my rocker panels sprayed ! He had 2 of his own trucks out front, and one had sprayed rocker panels... (late 80's Chevy) and it was peeling on the passenger side. Arcticat's got it together, dude, go with the 3M stuff he's talking about. I work for 3M, can vouch for the quality. #ad

I don't remember offhand, I'll have to look on the package. I looked EVERYWHERE, though, and this outfit was by far the cheapest. I decided to go overkill and cover all around the truck up to the second crease in the sheetmetal, about 8" from the bottom of the rockers. Take a look at the rockers on a new Ford Ranger, I have been told it's the same stuff. It worked great on my '99 Ranger, actually it was so clear I never noticed it was there until I cleaned the truck up to sell it.

Question for Wade Hogg: Where can I get some of that wire tape? I checked with a few large auto paint supply houses in the L. A. area when I lived there. They knew what I was talking about, but they didn't know where to get it. I checked 3M's website, thinking they were the ones who made it, but I didn't see it. I e-mailed their customer service address, and I got a reply stating that they don't make it.
I bought a can of that Herculiner, and I thought I'd experiment with it by coating the inside of a toolbox or something like that to see how it comes out. I'd like to get some of that tape, too.
Thanks, Andy

I recently saw a 2001 Ram that was equipped with a ladder rack and a grille guard. Both were heavily coated with Line-X. Looked kinda funny, but very funtional. The guy must have spent a small fortune on it, maybe about 1,500 bucks for the whole business. Wish he would have been out by his truck...
