All, My 97 has 131k, going in today, all of a sudden, no fuel pedal - pulled over and found the linkage bar broken in the all thread area. Someone had brazed it together before.

Any ideas why this would break? This truck has been turned up, and I suspect the afc starwheel has been cranked forward, [but haven't checked]

Part is on order.....

To add to this, my wife picks me up in my 02 ford PSD with 85k, long story short I get home, shower and hop in it to go to work, On the way out I jokingly say "I hope this one doesn't break down" 3 miles later pulling out on a 2 lane hiway I give it the juice, and get bad noises, shaking and blowing grey smoke, found oil running out the tailpipe.

Good news was the tow truck that dropped the dodge on my farm, picked up the Ferd and took it to the dealer.

Never had 2 quit in one day in 32 years, hope I never do again!!!

main thing to remeber here is the ford powerchoke choked the cummin had a dodge throttle part brake. the cummins still rules

You are right

Yep, the motor runs fine, just the bar broke, once I have the part, 10 minute fix.

Just trying to determine if this is a failure part, or unusual.

YEp, I am considering a 3rd Gen, given employee pricing, a 2500 nicely set up is 36K... I have posted in 3rd Gen asking about 06 reliability. Once the Ford gets fixed by the dealer, it will be sold. I like the ford truck, but powerstrokes arent' what they should be, my wife's 05 Powerstroke had a new turbo at 14K miles, this 02 of mine had 85k, best of care, and just dusted itself today, no chips only a 4 inch exhaust... .

I pull cattle and hay a bit, but I am not a full time farmer... so the truck is most run pretty empty.

Luke :)

Thanks!

Thanks for the info, reading the Safety recall it does appear the ball studs and end sockets are key.

I will check with dealer when I go today to pick up the threaded rod part.

Thanks,

Luke

This happened to me in a very remote place on highway 1 in Northern California. The rod broke in two. I was going fishing so I took my hook removing forceps and duct taped them to the rod joining the 2 pieces together went fishing and stopped at the parts store in Gualala on my way home. I managed to get out the piece broke off in the little ball and threaded what was left of the big piece back in far enough to get me home. No charge for the tool useage from the parts store, real nice guys.

My cousin's '97 broke and he duct taped it together until i could fix it with new parts. Mine broke just as I was coming into town back home so I pulled over and removed both rod ends and used a piece of tie wire as the throttle rod, which worked well. Took it back up the hill to the shop, removed the broken piece and threaded the old one back in and it's run this way somewhere from 170 to 200k. I bought the part and keep it with me in case it breaks again. I have read about this a number of times on here so it's not unheard of.

Thanks for all the info. Interesting the rod would break, doesn't seem to be that much force on the rod. Given this is a rod that has likely been through a die machine 2x to get the left thread, that the mfg process cause a stress crack. Mine cracked on the left handed thread portion.

About 8 years ago mine broke with no warning. The rod had broken on a stock truck. I had driven to a store and shut off the engine. Got back in a it was broken. Seems like sometimes they just get that feeling and break. JUst replace it and go on.
