Here I am

little HX-55 drive pressure

Dyno Numbers?

MBPR hardware FYI

Wanted to post results of the hybrid HX-55 from J. R. Adkins. There are a couple of versions of this turbo if I remember right, bigger wheels etc, I got the smaller version. Spoolup starts about 1700rpm and then hang-on, she really takes off. Drive pressure; at 50psi of boost it has right at 40psi of backpressure. Pretty good in my book. Didn't have a chance to really look at the EGT's. This charger should really shine on the track this year.

That is less drive pressure than most twin set ups isn't it?Sounds pretty good to me. Do they have something compatible with third gens?

And a little hard to believe, you sure the number aren't backwards.

J. Davy,

I'm wanting to say that it will work on the 3rd Gen, but I'm not 100%. I know J. R. will have something to work on your truck. He's a member of the TDR, send him an e-mail or give him a call at (317)281-3130.

Hey B glad you like it. DLange has that turbo and he is pretty happy w/ it too. Jim I thought that your backpressure was always supposed to be less than your boost. Or am I just confused. Oh yeah good luck next year at the track.

Drive pressure is only one small part of the equation, spoolup is just as important. When the redline of our engines is only 3400 RPM,the turbocharger needs to start spooling of idle, isn't 1700 just a little to late.

Thanks for his number. I would even be willing to go to the old style manifold and do a little plumbing or is that even a possibility?I have heard that the b1-04 is 1 to 1 at 40 psi but after that it starts to go up. Mark Kendrick told me his Twin setup was about 57 psi back pressure at 60 psi boost. I was also told by Diesel Dynamics that the stock hy-9 was 2 to 2. 5 drive ratio when it was over 40 psi, this meaning that your back pressure could be high as 100 psi. Scary! AS for spool up ,I am still not sure what to think of it as I have never had any different turbo other than stock. My 05 apparently has a slightly bigger turbo than my 03 but I went from a standard to a auto so it is hard for me to tell other than my old standard seemed very responsive. Either way if I have to hold the brake on a little at the track to get it to really spool that is fine by me just so long as it is not to goofy daily driving

Sorry Travis, I guess my setup is not right as the drive to boost is just about equal or a less less drive till 60 but at 80 psi boost it's 85 drive... ... that's when I dropped the gauge in the floor and started driving :D

Jim

Jim,what size exhaust housing is on your hx 40?

All PDR Twins use a 16cm housing and a big ole' fat wastegate, mine is no different... . direct copy, but mine was with permission from the man.

I really can't see a 55 spooling at 1700, definitely not in my truck at my timing level but I've been wrong before.

Define spooling! Spooling to me starts about 10 psi, that's were it can go from 10-80 in 2 seconds, some look at spooling as when it starts building boost, that should start about 650-700 degrees of EGT.

Try this for a test, put it in 1 to 1 gear (3rd for me) at 25 mph going to say 45 and put it at 800 degrees of EGT, what is the boost level at that point.

Then at what boost level does it build fast (like 10-20 for example) and at what level does slam the boost..... like you can't read the gauge. Truck weight, tire size, cam or not and a 12V(what timing) or 24V(box on or off) will vary this a little.

This will help the end customer better understand. My guess is the 55 should support (on the dyno) about 550 hp, is this about right?

Here an example, I did a 35/21 on a truck the other day that is about 400 on fuel and the EGT's are about 1000 while accelerating with 10-15 psi of boost but don't get much higher till you really get into allot of fuel, this shows what a big housing does to a turbo, but the throttle response with it is very good and it's not a lag pig.

Jim

I talked to J. R. Adkins. He said if a hx-40 will bolt in than this turbo will as well. Does anyone know what is needed to make a hx-40 fit On a 2005?

Huff N Puff,

This is a pretty good size charger, they spool later than the smaller ones. This turbo is intended for people running a decent amount of fuel or wanting to sledpull with. It's not a lag pig.

Jim,

At the 1700rpm it's making about 5-7psi, at about 10psi then she really lights. This isn't a stock HX-55, it has alot of modifications done to it so it spools alot faster. I will try some of your test one day and let you know, the weathers kind of crappy right now to do anything. You could sell your twins and buy J. R. 's 55 to run some test ;)

Woah there Mr. Fulmer, I was not meaning that in a bad way. I am still kind of learning about drive pressures and what not. I know that your setup is right I saw video from Dallas that my brother took. That is just what I though that I had read.

... ... No sweat!

Is there anyway I can get a copy of the Video... ... I'd pay for it! Heck I can't even get pics from that day... ..... guess I'm going to have to hire someone to shoot them for me!

I'd blow that 55 to the moon on my truck... ... way too much fuel, and I would be going backwards. You guys need to do the R&D!
