My understanding of the VP44 pump is rudimentary at best, but don't the plungers move 1 full stroke per compression stroke on a cylinder? So to do pilot injection with a VP44, you'd need to start the plunger stroke, and when the injector reaches pop-off pressure, stop the stroke, and then restart the stroke to continue the primary injection event. So I'm not if this would be an ECM change so much as a physical change to the VP44?

And some other idle ramblings: Depending on who you talk to, there are either 5 injection events (according to Cummins - 2 pilot, 1 main, 2 clean up) or two injection events (according to mechanics who have scoped the new trucks - 1 pilot, 1 main). So if there are indeed 5 events and the scopes are somehow being fooled, then maybe a 2 event injection sequence wouldn't be all that much quieter than 5 event sequence. The Powerstroke split shot injectors are a sort of pilot injection system, and they aren't really all that much quieter than an 02 and under Cummins.

Personally, I'd like to see someone smarter than I figure out a way to adapt the Common Rail pump, rail, and injectors to an 02 and down. That'd be sweet :D

And on the looks side, I love my 03. Its looks just plain mean. Like an old ant-eater. Loved them trucks :D

Well since the 2003 24v uses electronically controlled injectors - the DC engineers can completely control the pulse width - (amount of fuel injected) make it seem like its a "pilot injector" where a mechanical injector pump is limited by its design as to what it can do. .

As for adopting a 2003 fuel-injector system to a 2002,, well given enough money - anything can be accomplished - how about a 2003 complete cummins transplanted into a 2002 with its PCM & ECM computers... I know people have changed a 12V out replacing with a 24V - but then again still mechanical injection pumps

When I first moved into my neighborhood, I thought my truck would be offensive to everyone. ( I live in a golf course community). My wifey always complained about my truck being so loud when I left out at 5:30 in the morning:-{} But after I was there for a few months and got to know the neighbors they said they loved my truck because it was the best alarm clock they had ever had! If they were still in bed when my truck fired up, they knew that it was time to get up.

So I think I will keep my loud truck, but just for my neighbors sake. ;)

Calling All Geeks

I must have ESP - I titled this thread Little Squirt - Big Squirt and I might even be right LOL Before you say it or even think it; I know it was just dumb luck :) Hey don't laugh; we are getting some good information here.

Lets see, the last time I hooked up a scope to anything was in 1962 - now that's a long time ago LOL If one of our very own TDR Diesel Geeks or someone from Cummins or Diesel Dynamic is listening [I mean reading] please chime in and educate us. How does the new system work anyway? Heck if Diesel Dynamics can make a souped up VP44 they surely can make one that injects a little squirt followed by a big squirt - well assuming that's what it takes

While doing R&D for our new Propane system I found you can Quiet down the 24V HO with a little propane at idle not to mention it should also be a cleaner burn (Less soot in oil)... . Kurt

marital bliss

Pitbull - right on! my wife drives her BMW; I drive my truck. Period. No arguments about leaving the seat up or down. When she is in the truck with me I "can't" hear her.

Love is: she says if I sell this truck I can buy an 03 HO if its quieter.

Status: I still have my 00. Ain't life grand!

You got that right :D A sign of a good marriage is when the wife does not drive my vehicle. I will take care of hers but I don't care about driving it. A lot of people think that married people are suppose to like the same thing, if it is a good marriage??? Wrong, that's codependency :-laf
