Lost a bet

I just moved in across the road from work a month ago. My apartment is also just SE of the runways at Centennial Airport, a general aviation, private and charter airport.

I fly out of there with my friend/instructor and kinda aches my heart.

I heard a loud turboprop noise shortly after 7:30 and thought nothing of it, as we live just east of the final approach and I hear loud jets all the time.

At 9:15 my mom calls me and asks if I heard about the crash. I said no so I decided to take a look. Well, it was about 500-600 yards north of me at a business park in a data center parking lot, just missing the building. The crash site is half mile east of the threshold of 35R.

News says its a cargo Mitsubishi Mu-2 high wing twin turboprop (8-10 passenger size) flying checks, as in returned bank checks. Two pilots died.

Shortly after takeoff the pilot reported he needed to shut down an engine, tower asked him what the nature of the emergency is, said "I need to shut down an engine, roll the trucks!"

I think he took off from 17L (35R opposite end) and tried to do a 180, flew directly over my apartment, and crashed 500 yards north, trying to correct to get back to 35R. There was a pretty good wind from the west, not sure if that made a difference in his trying to get the plane back to the runway.

God bless the two pilots.

I've spent a fair amount of time working at Centennial when I lived in Denver. Always sad to hear about the "worst case scenero".
